United Expressline All Star/NCRA Sprint Results
81 Speedway, Wichita, KS - Weds. 8/21/96

   WICHITA, KS - Frankie Kerr capitalized on Van Gurley, Jr.'s slip to
drive away with Wednesday's win at the 81 Speedway in round there of
the second annual All Star versus NCRA Thunder Through The Plains Tour
II. An astounding showing of 96 Cruiser cars pushed the checkered into
Thursday morning.
   "After those bombers kinda chewed the track up, I thought it would
stay better longer," Kerr claimed following his second All Star win of
the year. "But it didn't seem to matter. We were pretty good anyway."
Kerr's machine was Stan Shoff's J&J, with a Davey Brown-Chevrolet
under the hood.
   Four starts were needed to complete the first two laps. On the
original green, Kerr was beaten off the pole by outside starter
Gurley. However, Craig Dollansky sat between turns one and two
with his left front wheel folded under. At the other end, Rocky Hodges
had spun to a stop. The next start saw Tim Shaffer and Devlin
Polkinghorn spin in turn one. Approaching the next single-
file start, Shaffer, in his own J&J running under the J&M Motorsports
banner, Polkinghorn, Hodges and Max Dumsney stacked up on the
homestratch. Finally on the fourth try, the race got going and went
the last 29 laps all green.
   Kerr chased Gurley until the leader vanished off the top of turn
two. "He just kept rinning it in there harder and harder," Kerr
smiled. "I figured I was going to stay on the bottom and just keep
pressuring him."
   All that remained was to count down the laps as Kerr worked the
rubbery black groove far away from the field. "We've been running them
(Goodyears) more here lately," Kerr said of his
tires. "Tracks just seem to like them better." The win came with a
straightaway to spare. "I thought there was someone on me," he
concluded. "The wall echoes here and it sounds like somebody's right
on you."
   Gary Wright went past Gurley, Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash
winner Kevin Huntley and Outerwears Pre-filters B Main winner Don
Droud, Jr. to score second. Gurley, Huntley, seventh starting Jeff
Shepard, Droud, new track record holder Aaron Berryhill, 14th starting
Danny Smith, Paul McMahan and Dale Blaney rounded out the top ten. The
Southwest Expresslines heat went to Shaffer, the ButlerBuilt heat to
Kenny Jacobs and the other two heats to Dumsney and Shane
Stewart.
