        McCarl, Lasoski Thrill Home Fans in Second Prelim

    KNOXVILLE, IA (August 15) - Danny Lasoski and Terry McCarl
have staged some memorable battles during Knoxville Raceway's
weekly racing program in recent years. Even though they rank
first and second in the track's point standings, what they will
remember most about this year is their battle in Wednesday's
Preliminary Feature at the 36th Annual Amoco Knoxville Nationals.
    "I want to thank Danny Lasoski," McCarl told his adoring fans
from victory lane. "He's the toughest competitor I've ever raced
against. Nothing motivates me like he does. Danny is a great
driver and a great competitor. We can run side-by-side and we're
not going to stick each other in the fence or anything. It's just
a lot of fun racing with him."
    McCarl and Lasoski exchanged the lead twice in the 20-lap
race, but no more than six car-lengths separated them during the
first 18.
    McCarl, the polesitter, burst into the lead as the green flag
fell. Lasoski, who started outside the second row, raced past
Fifth Quaker State Heat Race winner Craig Dollansky and Keith
Kauffman during the opening lap and started challenging his
Knoxville nemesis for first place.
    McCarl entered lapped traffic late in lap six, and bumped the
wall in turn two as he took the high line around a pack of
backmarkers next time around. Lasoski caught him on the back
straightaway seconds later, and took the lead two laps later.
    Dollansky challenged McCarl for the runner-up spot during the
race's middle stages, allowing "The Dude" to open a five-car-
length advantage in lapped traffic.
    McCarl started reeling in Lasoski as defending Skoal Outlaw
Series champion Dave Blaney passed Dollansky for third place late
in the 14th lap. Terry regained the lead with a daring move deep
in the fourth corner late in the 17th lap.  "The Dude" kept pace
    with McCarl in lapped traffic until Blaney steered the #10
Vivarin J&J deep into turn three to take over the runner-up spot
with the white flag flying.
    McCarl built a comfortable advantage during the final lap,
and took the checkered flag with 15 car-lengths to spare.
    "It was just another day at the office," McCarl said after
climbing atop his car, swinging a checkered flag and hugging his
wife, flagman Doug Clark and sponsor Bill McCroskey.
    "I think Danny must have lost his brakes or something. He was
a little faster than me. When he went by me, I just got my elbows
up." "The Buckeye Bullet," who started inside the fourth row,
    said it was tough to make up any ground until late in the
race.
    "We caught a couple breaks and were able to get to second,"
Blaney said. "The track was definitely better around the top. We
just had to race around the top and wait for mistakes."
    Dollansky raced wheel-to-wheel with Lasoski in turn four and
was less than a car-length behind at the checkered flag.
    "It seemed like cars were going every which-way in lapped
traffic," Dollansky said. "I got held up a little there, but I
picked it right up again."
    Five-time defending Nationals champion Steve Kinser won a
race-long battle with Stevie Smith to finish in fourth place.
Along with his EcoWater Quick-Time Award-winning performance in
time trials and a second-place run in the First Quaker State Heat
Race, "The King of the Outlaws" scored 489 points to rank third
entering Friday's Pole Scramble races.
    Rounding out the top 10 in the Second Preliminary Feature
were Joe Gaerte, Greg Hodnett, 12th-starting Don Droud, Jr., and
First Quaker State Hear Race winner Keith Kauffman. The caution-
free feature was run in 6:20.9.
    Bobby Allen, the 1990 Amoco Knoxville Nationals champion, was
the second-fastest qualifier in the 82-car field. Unfortunately,
engine problems in his #1a kept him from racing the rest of the
evening.
    Fellow Pennsylvania racer Steve Smith who won a World of
Outlaws Preliminary Feature at Hagerstown Speedway on August 3rd,
suffered a blown engine during hot laps and was unable to even
run a qualifying lap.
    Kevin Gobrecht, substituting for Jac Haudenschild in the #22
Pennzoil Maxim, led the first five laps of the Fifth Quaker State
Heat Race. He finished fifth, however, then eighth in the "B"
