Mark Kinser Dominates Grandview Event

    BECHTELSVILLE, PA (August 5) - Mark Kinser continued his
pursuit of the 1996 Skoal Outlaw Series championship Monday with
a near-perfect performance before a capacity crowd at Grandview
Speedway.
    Kinser received his 29th EcoWater Quick-Time Award of the
year for pacing the qualifying session, won the Vivarin Dash and
led all 30 laps in the "A" Feature. Mark's 18th victory of the
season extended his lead in the Skoal Outlaw Series point
standings to 327 points over defending series champion Dave
Blaney.
    Although a 14th-lap spin kept him out of the top 10 for only
the 10th time this year, Andy Hillenburg made history by
qualifying for his 300th straight "A" Feature. The last time
Hillenburg and his #2 STP J&J failed to qualify for a World of
Outlaws main event was May 29, 1992, at Williams Grove Speedway.
    Mark, the fastest qualifier in the 27-car field, came within
.255 seconds of breaking the one-lap record cousin Steve Kinser
set at Grandview on May 29th, circling the high-banked, 1/3-mile
oval in 12.289-second qualifying run. The luck of the inversion
pill draw allowed him to start the Vivarin Dash on the pole. He
led all five laps in that race for the right to start the main
event inside the front row.
    Mark burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A"
Feature, only to have the start called back when Greg Hodnett,
Joey Saldana and Todd Shaffer crashed in turn three. Only
Saldana's #75 Mopar Maxim was able to restart the race, as
Shaffer flipped and Hodnett's sprinter received extensive damage.
Jeff Swindell dropped out as the race resumed when the #7TW Gold
Eagle Maxim suffered a broken nozzle line.
    Kinser drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim into the lead again when
the green flag replaced the red, and opened a six-car-length
advantage within three laps. He entered lapped traffic two laps
later, and was a full straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers
by lap seven.
    Steve Kinser drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past Jac
Haudenschild for third place and Johnny Herrera passed Joe Gaerte
for fifth as Mark continued to extend his comfort zone.
    Mark's large lead disintegrated late in the 14th lap when
Hillenburg spun to a stop on the front straightaway. Two laps
later, Bob Howard brought out the red flag when he flipped in the
third corner. The race was temporarily halted again during lap 18
when Stevie Smith took the #71M EcoWater Systems Maxim for a spin
in turn two.
    Mark steered the #5M to the rim while Sammy Swindell dropped
into the low groove on the ensuing restart. At the same time,
Haudenschild challenged "The King of the Outlaws" for third
place.
    Finding Grandview's high groove to his liking, Mark put 10
car-lengths between himself and Sammy's #1 ChannelLock Gambler
within three laps. He caught the backmarkers again with seven
laps remaining.
    Although the plot was similar, Mark and Swindell switched the
roles they played the night before at Hagerstown Speedway. As
Kinser raced away, he was often held up by lapped traffic,
allowing Sammy to narrow the gap.
    Swindell, a two-time World of Outlaws "A" Feature winner at
Grandview, closed in during the 26th lap when Mark slowed behind
a pack of backmarkers. A quick move around Len Thompson gave him
some breathing room, but Sammy narrowed the gap again when Mark
approached more lapped traffic.
    Sammy's charge was too little, too late, however, as Mark
took the checkered flag with three car-lengths to spare. Rounding
out the top 10 in the Skoal Outlaw Series' 46th event of the year
were Steve Kinser, "The Wild Child," Herrera, Blaney, Gaerte,
Smith, First Quaker State Heat Race winner Fred Rahmer and Paul
McMahan.
    "The Buckeye Bullet," the victim of a blown engine in the
dash, drove the #10 Vivarin J&J into the top 10 for the 40th time
this season.
    Rahmer, who drove Al Hamilton's #77 Manheim Auto Auctions J&J
past seven sprinters, received a $500 bonus for being the
highest-finishing Pennsylvania racer. WoO
