United Expresslines All Star Sprint Results

   KOKOMO, IN - Van Gurley Jr. turned in an outstanding
performance to capture his second United Expresslines All Star
sprint car feature of the season Sunday night on the quarter-
mile Evans Kokomo Speedway.
   "I remember coming to this place when I was younger and
watching all of the Kinsers and my dad race here," the second
generation driver recalled. "To win here at Kokomo really
means a lot to me." Gurley’s winning machine is a Maxim
Chassis with a Gaerte-Chevy powerplant under the hood.
   Starting from the pole after four cars were inverted,
Gurley stayed in front of the 22 car field from green to
checkered with lots of dicing for position behind him. Kevin
Huntley started alongside Gurley in the United Expresslines
Schnee and held second the first half of the event.
   The low groove was the line preferred by many of the
drivers in the feature, including Gurley. Huntley also ran the
inside line, while Craig Dollansky in the Dean Lindsey
Stealth, who started seventh, began to move up on the thin
outside cushion. By lap 11 Dollansky had advanced to third
over points leader and defending series champion Dale Blaney
and began to challenge Huntley for second. But the top cushion
began to fade, and Blaney regained third on lap 19 and
Dollansky went pitside after tagging the wall in turn two on
lap 21.
   On the lap 21 restart, Gurley gain opened up his lead, with
Blaney and Kelly Kinser passing Huntley for second and third.
The top three remained in that order the final 19 laps as
yellows on laps 27 and 32 kept Gurley clear of any lapped
traffic. Blaney tried both the high and low grooves but failed
in his quest to find a way around Gurley.
   After Gurley, Blaney’s Hughes Wheel and Axle J&J and
Kinser’s Kinser Timber Stealth came Danny Smith in fourth in
the Kenny Bodkins Jenkins-Kistler, with Frankie Kerr’s Stan
Shoff J&J fifth. Rocky Hodges in Jr. Holbrook’s J&J, Sarah
Fisher in her fathers Schnee, Dean Jacobs’ Stealth, local
driver Billy Rose and Huntley, who hit the wall several times
late in the race, completed the top ten finishers.
   Smith won the Southwest Expresslines heat, Jacobs the
ButlerBuilt heat and Rose and Todd Kelley captured the other
heats. Gurley took the Outerwears Pre-filters B main and fast
qualifier Shaffer won the Commercial Truck and Trailer Dash.
Brian Carlson flipped early in the A Main, but was not injured
while Dan Henning won the modified feature.
