LEWIS TAKES SECOND-STRAIGHT WORLD CHALLENGE S2 WIN; GIGLIOTTI
SCORES FIRST 1996 VICTORY WITH T1 WIN ON STREETS OF TROIS-RIVIERES
TROIS-RIVIERES, Quebec, Can. -- Shane Lewis, driving the #19 Mosler
Intruder, scored his second-straight SCCA World Challenge S2 class
victory after taking a 0.470-second win on the streets of Trois-Rivieres
over Andy Pilgrim, in the #1 Rohr Engineering Porsche 911 GT2.
Steve Saleen, driving the #65 Saleen/Allen Racing Saleen Mustang,
finished third, followed by Steve Dinan, in the #4 Dinan Engineering BMW
540 Sport and Thomas Safar II, in the Tsunami Racing Chevrolet Corvette.
In the T1 class, Lou Gigliotti, in the #28 LG Motorsports Saleen
Mustang, claimed his first 1996 series win after topping Greg Theiss'
Archer Motorsports Eagle Talon AWD Turbo by 1.705 seconds. Finishing
third in T1 was Mark Simo, in the #9 SVD Ford Mustang Cobra, followed by
Brian Clarke, in the #88 Raybestos Callaway Camaro and David Lapham, in
the #7 Mazda RX-7 Turbo.
Lewis, of Jupiter, Fla., started the 35-lap, 52.71-mile combined S2 and
T1 class race fifth and steadily improved his position as the race's
early leaders dropped out with mechanical troubles.
"I was sitting third for a while, just holding my position," said Lewis.
"Some of the guys got a lot of heat into their tires and then made a few
mistakes. I let the race come to me -- my first goal was to bring the
car home."
Lewis claimed a lead he would never relinquish after leader Almo
Coppelli, in the #00 Callaway Corvette, spun on lap 23, one lap after he
passed race-leader Rob Rizzo, in the #55 Saleen/Allen Saleen Mustang.
Rizzo had held the top spot for 13 laps after passing early race-leader
Pilgrim on lap nine.
In the T1 class, Gigliotti was able to out-muscle front-runners Willy
Lewis, in the #33 Team Mirage/Archer Motorsports Eagle Talon AWD Turbo,
and Theiss with a front- straight pass and never looked back, leading
laps 11-34 for the win.
Behind Gigliotti, Lewis and Theiss held the second and third spots until
Lewis' car, damaged after making contact in two on-track incidents,
succomed in the late going, eventually dropping Lewis to 10th as his car
came to an on-course halt on the final lap.
