SCHROEDER FASTEST QUALIFIER FOR TROIS-RIVIERES TRANS-AM
TROIS-RIVIERES, Quebec, Can. -- Dorsey Schroeder, in the #12 Raybestos
Ford Mustang Cobra, posted a time of 1:03.099 (85.922 mph) to qualify
fastest for Sunday's 55-lap, 82.83-mile SCCA Trans-Am Championship
race on the streets of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, part of the Grand Prix
Player's de Trois-Rivieres.
"The handwriting is on the wall--we're down to just five races," said
Schroeder. "We're going to run for the fastest-qualifier spot every time
now. We're real happy and I have a good car for the race."
Schroeder, of Osage Beach, Mo., will start fifth with the Trans-Am's
inverted Goodyear Fast Five qualifying. Posting the second-fastest
qualifying time to start fourth was Tom Kendall, in the #11 All Sport
Body Quencher Ford Mustang Cobra. Kendall, a two-time winner on the
streets of Trois-Rivieres, posted a time of 1:03.282 (85.673 mph).
Qualifying third to start third was defending Trois-Rivieres race winner
Ron Fellows, of Toronto, Ontario, Can. Fellows, in the #3 Sunoco/AER
Manufacturing Chevrolet Camaro, posted a time of 1:03.284 (84.670 mph)
to lead a Chevrolet 3-4-5 qualifying effort, locking in the top three
starting positions for Chevrolet, which trails Ford by two points in the
Manufacturers' Championship point standings, 69 to 71.
"I was not going for the pole (fastest qualifier) and I almost went
too fast," said Fellows. "We (the Chevrolet drivers) were under strict
orders not to be the fastest qualifier and start in the front rows,
instead."
Qualifying fourth to start second was Paul Gentilozzi, in the #5
HighwayMaster Camaro, and Scott Sharp, in the #33 Rain-X Oil Energizer
Camaro, qualified fifth to start on the pole. Sharp, another two-time
Trois-Rivieres race-winner, will make his first "pole" start of the 1996
season.
"I've always liked coming to Trois-Rivieres, and I've enjoyed a fair
amount of success here," said Sharp. "If I can't be the fastest
qualifier, I'd rather qualify fourth or fifth and start on the front
row."
Sunday's Trans-Am Classic at the 1.506-mile, 10-turn Trois-Rivieres
street circuit will be broadcast live on the Speedvision Network,
beginning at 4:30 p.m. (EDT).
