INDYCAR: Fittipaldi released from hospital 


EMERSON FITTIPALDI RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL; OUT FOR REMAINDER OF SEASON


DETROIT (Aug. 1, 1996) -- IndyCar star Emerson Fittipaldi, recovering
from surgery to repair a fractured cervical vertebra, was released
Thursday from Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.


Fittipaldi, who had surgery performed Monday on the seventh cervical
vertebra, sustained the injury as well as a partially collapsed and
bruised left lung and fractured left shoulder blade from an accident
during Sunday's Marlboro 500 at Michigan International Speedway.
Fittipaldi, a 49-year-old Brazilian, will need a minimum of three months
to recuperate and the timetable will force him to miss the remainder of
the 1996 PPG Indy Car World Series season. He is resting comfortably at
his home in Key Biscayne, Fla.


Fittipaldi has never missed an IndyCar race because of injury since his
career began in 1984. During his 13-year IndyCar career, he has made 195
starts and captured 22 victories and 17 poles. He also claimed the PPG
Cup championship in 1989 and entered this year having won at least one
race for an IndyCar-record 11 consecutive seasons.


Driving this season for the newly formed Hogan Penske Racing team,
Fittipaldi started all 12 events and had a season-best finish of fourth
at Nazareth and Milwaukee. He was tied for 16th in the PPG Cup race
with 29 points. Hogan Penske Racing has not announced any plans for the
remainder of the PPG Indy Car World Series season.
