Mark Kinser Dominates Fifth Annual Silver Cup

    SARVER, PA (July 30) - After going his whole career without a
victory at Lernerville Speedway, Mark Kinser is making up for it
in what is turning out to be a career year for him.
    Kinser completed a sweep of the 1996 Skoal Outlaw Series
races at Lernerville Tuesday when he dominated the Fifth Annual
Don Martin Silver Cup event. He received his 26th EcoWater Quick-
Time Award of the year after breaking Lernerville's one-lap
record, then earned the right to start the "A" Feature on the
pole by winning the Vivarin Dash and led all 35 laps in the main
event. The $29,000 he received was the second-largest winner's
share offered in a World of Outlaws race so far this season.
    Mark's 12.875-second time trial was .151 seconds faster than
the previous record and almost a half-second faster than Steve
Kinser, the second-fastest qualifier.
    "We've been concentrating on the big races," the World of
Outlaws points leader told the standing-room-only crowd from
victory lane. "Johnny (Herrera) won the King's Royal, so we've
been pointing toward this one and the (Amoco) Knoxville
Nationals. I'm really glad to get this one."
    Mark burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the main
event. Before he completed the first lap, however, a turn-four
collision sent Billy Pauch flipping and caused defending Silver
Cup champion Stevie Smith to slide off the racing surface.
Since Smith and Pauch started inside the third and fourth rows,
respectively, Sammy Swindell and Dave Blaney each moved forward a
row in the restart lineup.
    Blaney, winner of three Skoal Outlaw Series "A" Features at
Lernerville, took the high line into fourth place as Steve Kinser
and Pennsylvanian Ed Lynch, Jr., exchanged the runner-up spot
during the second and third laps. "The Buckeye Bullet" steered
the #10 Vivarin J&J deep into the second corner to pass Lynch for
third place early in lap four.
    Mark was a full straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers
when he entered lapped traffic five laps into the race. Blaney
caught "The King of the Outlaws" two laps later, and took over
second place with a low move into turn two the next time around.
    Blaney closed to within five car-lengths of the lead within
five laps, and caught Mark in dense lapped traffic early in lap
14. Less than a car-length separated Kinser and "The Buckeye
Bullet" during the next six laps before Lance Blevins stopped the
#21 Citgo J&J on the front straightaway with a flat right rear
tire. The caution allowed Smith's crew to repair the front wing
on the #71M EcoWater Systems Maxim.
    Mark raced away from the field and Andy Hillenburg passed
Lynch for fourth place as the race resumed. Kinser opened a five-
car-length cushion within two laps after the race resumed, only
to have Blaney catch him behind a pack of backmarkers early in
the 23rd lap.
    Kinser held his line in dense lapped traffic for two laps
before finding a route around the backmarkers early in lap 26. He
increased his advantage to a half-straightaway while Blaney
chased the lapped cars for another lap.
    Second Quaker State Heat Race winner Bob Felmlee crashed into
the fourth-corner retaining wall late in the 32nd lap, setting up
a four-lap dash to the checkered flag. A lapped car restarting
between the leaders kept Blaney from challenging Mark, who took
the checkered flag with six car-lengths to spare.
    "I had to pick my way through lapped traffic," Mark said,
"but seeing Dave woke me up."
    The final lap featured a three-car battle for third place.
With Hillenburg keeping his #2 STP J&J in the low groove and
Swindell racing around the rim, both passed Steve Kinser at the
flagstand. But Kinser, a 12-time Skoal Outlaw Series "A" Feature
winner at Lernerville, steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim into
the high groove to pass Sammy and Andy in the first corner.
Swindell passed Hillenburg in turn three to claim fourth place.
    Jeff Swindell, the 1993 Silver Cup champion, finished sixth,
ahead of Lynch, 19th-starting Jac Haudenschild, Dale Blaney and
Bobby Allen. WoO
