Mark Kinser Records Clean Sweep at Knoxville

    KNOXVILLE, IA (July 24) - "I sure wish this was a Saturday
night in August," Mark Kinser shouted after recording a clean
sweep in the Skoal Outlaw Series' final Amoco Knoxville Nationals
tuneup Wednesday.
    Although Kinser, the leader in the World of Outlaws point
standings, has won seven "A" Features at Knoxville Raceway in the
last three years, he has had his share of heartbreaks at the
Nationals. In 1990, Mark led the first 22 laps in the main event
only to have mechanical problems keep him from winning. He led
the first 17 laps before 11-time champion Steve Kinser passed him
last year.
    "We've run so well here, the pressure is on us to win the
Nationals now," Mark said. "That's all we have left to do. Our
car always operates so well, all we have to do is unload it and
race. I've never done it, so it's time for me to do it."
    If Mark just approaches Wednesday's performance in
Knoxville's McDonald's-sponsored program, he should win the
championship when TNN:  The Nashville Network televises the 36th
Annual Amoco Knoxville Nationals live on August 17th.
    He received his 25th EcoWater Quick-Time Award of the year
Wednesday after pacing the qualifying session with a 15.340-
second qualifying run. Mark's 117.340-m.p.h. lap was only .049
seconds off the one-lap record he set at the legendary half-mile
oval on April 25, 1992.
    Although he started outside the third row in the First Quaker
State Heat Race and the Vivarin Dash, Mark won both races. He was
leading the five-lap Vivarin race within three laps. Winning the
dash gave him the luxury of starting the "A" Feature on the pole.
    Kinser burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the 25-
lap main event, but the red flag was thrown before he completed
the first lap, as Terry McCarl, Greg Hodnett, Danny Lasoski and
Bob White crashed in the second corner.
    Outside polesitter Dave Blaney kept pace with Mark as the
race resumed, and they raced wheel-to-wheel down the front
straightaway. Kinser took the lead with a low move into turn one,
and put 15 car-lengths between his #5M Wirtgen Maxim and his
closest pursuers by the end of the first lap.
    Mark raced away from the field as Sammy Swindell passed
Blaney for the runner-up spot and ninth-starting Steve Kinser
took the low line through turn four to pass Stevie Smith for
sixth place during the second lap.
    Mark extended his lead to a half-straightaway as Jeff
Swindell and Steve Kinser passed Johnny Herrera two laps later.
Jeff continued his run toward the front with a fourth-corner pass
as the leaders entered lapped traffic late in the sixth lap.
    Sammy cut Mark's lead to 15 car-lengths within two laps, and
Steve steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim deep into the fourth
corner to pass "The Buckeye Bullet" for fourth place late in lap
10.
    Sammy closed to within eight car-lengths as Mark slowed
behind a pack of backmarkers midway through the race. Steve took
over third place with a low move into turn four late in the 12th
lap, and made it a three-car battle for the lead the next time
around.
    Just as Sammy and Steve narrowed the gap to five car-lengths,
however, Mark burst out of lapped traffic and started increasing
his advantage again. He returned to his half-straightaway comfort
zone within two laps, only to slow in dense lapped traffic again
during lap 22.
    Sammy made a late charge, but was two car-lengths behind when
Mark took the checkered flag. Steve Kinser finished third, ahead
of Jeff Swindell, Blaney, Herrera, Smith, Skip Jackson, Joe
Gaerte and 15th-starting Andy Hillenburg.
    Paul McMahan, driving Dennis Roth's #83 Beef Packers Stealth
in his first Skoal Outlaw Series event, finished 11th.
    Mechanical problems kept Jac Haudenschild and Tim Kuhn from 
starting the main event, which allowed Lasoski and Craig 
Dollansky to tag the rear of the 24-car field. WoO
