Herrera Overcomes Adversity, Wins King's Royal
By Richard Day
ROSSBURG, OH (July 20) - When TNN: The Nashville Network
turns its camera lights on, Johnny Herrera and the #47 Casey's
General Stores Maxim spring to life.
Herrera ran the race of his life Saturday when TNN televised
the 13th Annual King's Royal live and the Skoal Outlaw Series
sanctioned the $50,000-to-win event for the first time.
"This is the biggest win of my career," Herrera told TNN's
Bobby Gerould as National SpeedSport News Publisher-Emeritus
Chris Economaki draped the king's robe on his back. "I've won
some races, but I've always wanted to win the King's Royal and
have my name up there with the elite. Now I can say I'm one of
them."
Herrera, who led the first 12 laps when TNN televised the
World of Outlaws' May 25th "A" Feature from Williams Grove, had a
comfortable advantage when his side board buckled with eight laps
remaining. Although the distorted wing caused the #47 to handle
awkwardly, Herrera maintained the lead through three caution
periods and was five car-lengths ahead of Andy Hillenburg when he
took the checkered flag.
"I had no idea the wing was like that," Herrera said. "All I
know was that my crew kept motioning to me under the yellows to
run harder and harder. So that's what I did. I'm glad I didn't
know about the wing."
It didn't bother Herrera that he followed Hillenburg across
the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. His second-place finish
allowed him to start outside the front row.
"I had the advantage of starting on the outside," said
Hillenburg, who won the five-lap race from the outside pole.
Herrera agreed with Hillenburg, saying, "It's better to start
on the outside here at Eldora."
The 1986 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year took full
advantage of his starting position as the green flag fell in the
30-lap championship feature, racing around Hillenburg in turn
four as the green flag fell. Herrera was 20 car-lengths ahead of
Hillenburg when he entered lapped traffic five laps into the
race.
Hillenburg and First Quaker State Heat Race winner Jac
Haudenschild narrowed the gap to two car-lengths within four
laps, however. Herrera appeared to be increasing his advantage
midway through the race, when he slid out of the low groove,
allowing Hillenburg to catch him on the back straightaway.
The #22 Pennzoil Maxim spun completely around on the front
straightaway early in the 18th lap and, although "The Wild Child"
lost third place, he kept the car from stalling to avoid being
sent to the rear of the field.
Craig Dollansky's second-corner spin brought out the caution
flag and tightened the field three laps later. Herrera was racing
away from the field when the side board on his top wing buckled
and turned toward the infield at a 45-degree angle.
Hillenburg appeared to take the lead with a fourth-corner
move past Herrera with six laps remaining when Dean Jacobs spun
into the retaining wall in turn four, bringing out the caution
flag and nullifying the pass.
Sammy Swindell, the 1992 King's Royal champion, spun into
Skoal Outlaw Series points leader Mark Kinser on the back stretch
within seconds after the green flag replaced the yellow. The
collision sent Swindell to the pits with a broken front end and
damaged the top wing on Kinser's #5M Wirtgen Maxim.
Jeff Shepard exchanged third place with three-time King's
Royal champion Steve Kinser several times before colliding with
Haudenschild in the fourth corner with two laps remaining. Both
Shepard and "The Wild Child" suffered flat tires.
Hillenburg was unable to keep pace with Herrera as the race
resumed and held off Steve Kinser for second place. Stevie Smith
executed a last-lap pass of Mark Kinser to claim fourth place.
Completing the top 10 in the $113,200 main event were Jeff
Swindell, 23rd-starting Dave Blaney, Donny Schatz, Joey Saldana
and "B" Feature winner Frankie Kerr. WoO
