          Mark Wins Battle of Kinser Cousins at Eldora

    ROSSBURG, OH (July 19) - On the eve of the 13th Annual King's
Royal, Mark Kinser not only praised "The King of the Outlaws," he
defeated him when a capacity crowd welcomed the Skoal Outlaw
Series to Eldora Speedway.
    "I won tonight, but Steve (Kinser) is still 'The King' - he
always will be," Mark said of his legendary cousin. "I've run a
lot of seconds and thirds here, so it's nice to get my first
win."
    The 30-lap battle was the third in the war the Kinser cousins
have waged at "The World's Fastest Half-Mile" this season. In
April, their first-lap collision sent Steve's #11 Quaker State
Maxim flipping into the first-corner retaining wall. Steve got a
measure of revenge when CBS Sports' television cameras captured
the action in mid-June passing Mark with two laps remaining to
win the main event.
    Mark, the leader in the World of Outlaws point standings,
opened Friday's festivities by earning his 23rd EcoWater Quick-
Time Award of the year. His 13.560-second qualifying lap around
the high-banked, 1/2-mile oval was the fastest in the 55-car
field.
    With Steve following Mark across the finish line in the
Vivarin Dash, the Kinsers started the 30-lap main event on the
front row again. "The King of the Outlaws" raced around Mark high
in turn four to take the lead immediately after the green flag
fell.
    Dave Blaney, a four-time winner at Eldora, relegated Mark to
third place with a high move through turn two seconds later. Mark
returned the favor two laps later, however, steering the #5M
Wirtgen Maxim deep into the second corner to regain the runner-up
spot.
    Mark caught Steve within a lap and chased him into lapped
traffic. Mark attempted to take the lead in turn two, but was
unable to complete the pass.
    Third-row starters Jac Haudenschild and Sammy Swindell were
reeling in the leaders when the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim
driven by Third Quaker State Heat Race winner Johnny Herrera hit
the third-corner retaining wall. Then, as the cars were lining up
to restart the race, the #22 Pennzoil Maxim suffered a flat right
rear tire, forcing Haudenschild to stop in turn one.
    Mark took the low line into turn three and slid in front of
Steve in the fourth corner as the green flag replaced the yellow.
Although they collided slightly, the cousins continued their
battle for the lead.
    "I just messed up on that restart," Steve admitted after the
race. "I should have stayed low and covered the inside line."
    Mark opened an eight-car-length advantage within four laps
after taking the lead. He caught the backmarkers again midway
through the race.
    Mark was a half-straightaway ahead when Charlie Fisher
allowed his #48 sprinter to spin into the inside guard rail in
turn two early in the 18th lap. Two lapped cars restarting
between the Kinser cousins allowed Mark to return to his half-
straightaway comfort zone within two laps after the race resumed.
    Although the leaders entered lapped traffic again with nine
laps remaining, Steve was unable to narrow the gap. He was racing
into turn four as Mark took the checkered flag.
    Swindell, who captured the 200th "A" Feature victory of his
career at Eldora in April, finished in third place. Completing
the top 10 in the Skoal Outlaw Series' 39th event of the year
were the Blaney brothers - Dave and Dale - Haudenschild, 15th-
starting Jeff Swindell, Andy Hillenburg, Dean Jacobs and Frankie
Kerr.
    Although Stevie Smith wrestled with steering problems
throughout the final 25 laps, he managed to drive the #71M
EcoWater Systems Maxim into 11th place.
    Joe Gaerte, the only provisional starter in the main event,
raced past nine sprinters to finish 16th. WoO
