BOBBY FIELDS RETURNS TO ANDERSON’s VICTORY LANE
By Dave Hascall
ANDERSON, Ind. (July 13) --- A regular program of Hoosier Park Late
Models, Big Lots Figure-8 Cars and Street Stocks were on tap Saturday
at the Anderson Speedway. Bobby Fields, who was seriously injured in
early 1995, returned to Victory Lane for the Hoosier Park Late Models
for the first time since coming back this April.
Touring professional Ray Skillman is having fits with Hoosier Park
Late Model starts. For the fourth consecutive week, he has spun on
the opening lap. To make matters worse, he did it twice tonight. On
the initial start, he spun off of turn three, sending Fields and
others to the outside wall. On the next restart, he made a lap and a
half before spinning off of turn two. Al Grogg, Barry Jackson and Tom
Flynn were involved. Grogg was the only one to continue. Bobby
Fields assumed the lead on the second restart with Vic Hellis in tow.
Hellis’s mount began to give up the handle as first Brian Rievley
challenged and then fast timer Tim Neal. Neal pushed Hellis hard but
Hellis slipped on his own and spun. He recovered, a lap down. Fields
won over Rievley, Neal, William Mefford and Grogg. Mefford won the
fast heat over B. Fields and Hellis. Bull Baker took the second heat
ahead of Ray Fullen and Jackson.
Terry Malone was looking for his first 15 lap Big Lots Figure-8
feature win of the year. Point leader Rich Boyer pushed hard and
finally got by on lap 8. Malone’s driveline broke shortly thereafter.
Boyer took the win with Doug Riddle, Joe Beaver, Mike Cain and Herb
Rose trailing. Cain won the fast heat over Gene Huston and Riddle.
Rod Phipps won the second heat over Chris Bair and Tim Lemon. Beaver
broke his own three month old Figure-8 track record with a 19.008 run.
The 20 lap Street Stock “A” main got off to a controversial start.
Rich Goodwin and Shane Reed had a spin together in their heat race.
In an apparent act of retaliation, Goodwin rammed Reed out of the way
on lap one of the feature. Reed’s mount was hit by Dennis Wallen and
Larry Southerland. Reed’s radiator was busted, ending his night.
Reed showed his displeasure by letting his car roll hard into
Goodwin’s on the yellow. Goodwin hopped from his car to try to get
after Reed. Reed was barred for one week, but not Goodwin. Jason
Fullen took the lead over Benny Blevins and Don Cain. Blevins took
the lead while Mike Stewart began to push Cain. He pushed Cain too
hard. Not only did he get Don sideways, he kept on shoving him until
he was gone. Cain got his spot back, while Stewart was sent to the
rear. Blevins took his second win of the year over Fullen, Cain,
Brian McVey and Chris Bair. Mark Wyman looked headed for another “B”
Main win but his car failed, letting John Magee win over Jeff Cravens,
Bobby Jeffries and Jerry Swinford, Jr. Ronnie Rose, Frank Boling,
Jeffries and Danny Stanley, Jr. won heats.
