TORONTO-- Patrick Carpentier, of Joliette, Que., captured his second
straight Player's/Toyota Atlantic Championship victory Saturday at the Molson
Indy Toronto.
Carpentier's victory, his second consecutive wire-to-wire triumph,
improved the 24-year-old's lead in the points championship with 107 after six of
the 12 scheduled events. Case Montgomery, of Salinas, Calif., moved into second
with 73 points, after finishing second in the race. Lee Bentham, of Richmond
Hill, Ont., fell to third in the points with 70 after a 16th-place finish.
Carpentier's third victory of the season came under a yellow-flag, the
third full-course caution of the one-hour timed event. Carpentier was leading
Montgomery by just a car-length when Serge Szortyka, of Sinking Spring, Pa.,
crashed his Ralt RT-41 with seven minutes remaining, bringing out the final
yellow flag. From there, Carpentier cruised the final three laps under caution
to collect his fifth career Atlantic victory.
Carpentier averaged 69.098 miles-per-hour in the race, slowed
considerably by the three caution periods, and completed the race in
1:00:24.901.
The Player's/Toyota Atlantic Championship continues Aug. 3 at
Trois-Rivieres, Que.
