Swindell Wins Seventh Annual Beertown Showdown

    HALES CORNERS, WI (July 11) - Jeff Swindell's 1996 Skoal
Outlaw Series championship aspirations received a tremendous
boost Thursday when he won the Seventh Annual Beertown Showdown
before a capacity crowd at Hales Corners Speedway.
    Only three times since 1985 have winners of World of Outlaws
feature races at Hales Corners not gone on to capture the series
title that year.
    "It's really nice to win here, especially with so many Gold
Eagle executives in attendance," said Swindell, whose #7TW Maxim
is sponsored by the automotive additives manufacturer.
    The victory, Jeff's third of the year, pushed him back into
third place in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings.
    Accepting the $12,500 first prize climaxed an emotional night
for the Two Winners Racing team. Although Swindell was 10th-quick
- .423 seconds off brother Sammy's pace-setting time - he
received a spot in the Vivarin Dash when Kim Mock, Donny Schatz
and Alan Schmidt failed to qualify for the "A" Feature in their
respective Quaker State Heat Races. Jeff passed three cars in the
Vivarin Dash for the right to start the 40-lap main event outside
the second row.
    Sammy, who received his fourth EcoWater Quick-Time Award of
the year, won the First Quaker State Heat Race and earned the
right to start the "A" Feature on the pole by winning the seven-
lap dash. He raced ahead of the 24-car field as the green flag
fell in the main event, only to have outside polesitter Dave
Blaney take the lead with a high move into turn two seconds
later. At the same time, Jac Haudenschild passed Jeff for fourth
place.
    "The Buckeye Bullet" and Sammy raced wheel-to-wheel through
every turn during the first 3 1/2 laps. Sammy steered his #1
ChannelLock Gambler deep into the fourth corner to pass Blaney
for the lead late in lap four.
    Sammy and Blaney were six car-lengths ahead of Skoal Outlaw
Series points leader Mark Kinser when Travis Cram spun to a stop
in turn one early in the fifth lap.
    While Blaney continued to pressure the 1991 Beertown Showdown
champion, Jeff started making his way toward the front. He passed
"The Wild Child" for fourth place late in the ninth lap, and took
third from Mark three laps later.
    Sammy was three car-lengths ahead of "The Buckeye Bullet"
when he entered lapped traffic 14 laps into the race. Jeff caught
the leaders the next time around, and took over the runner-up
spot with a low move in the second corner early in lap 16.
    Jeff caught his brother late in the 17th lap. He took the low
line into turn two and won a back-straightaway drag race into the 
lead two laps later.
    Jeff saw his six-car-length advantage dissolve late in the
24th lap when Cram brought out the caution flag again with a
fourth-corner spin. The red flag replaced the yellow as the race
resumed when Frankie Kerr, Craig Dollansky, Stevie Smith and Jim
Carr crashed in turn three. Smith and Carr were forced to watch
the second half of the race from the pit area as their mangled
sprinters were towed from the track.
    Sammy made a run at Jeff on the ensuing restart, but was
unable to surge ahead. Dollansky joined Smith and Carr in the
pits after flipping in the fourth corner five laps later.
    Mark Kinser, whose battle with Joe Gaerte lasted 20 laps,
steered the #5M Wirtgen Maxim high into the second corner to take
over fourth place with 11 laps remaining. Steve Kinser, a nine-
time winner at Hales Corners, passed 10 cars during the first 30
laps and passed Gaerte for fifth place two laps later.
    While Sammy raced in the high groove and caught Jeff often in
the corners, he was never able to regain first place. Jeff
maintained a two-car-length advantage as the leaders darted
through lapped traffic during the final four laps.
    Mark Kinser won a last-lap drag race down the back stretch to
pass "The Buckeye Bullet" for third place. Completing the top 10
were Steve Kinser, Gaerte, Haudenschild, Andy Hillenburg, Kerr
and "B" Feature winner Johnny Herrera.
    The event was originally scheduled for June 19th, but was
postponed when rain made Hales Corners' semi-banked, 1/3-mile
oval unsafe for racing. WoO
