Mark Kinser Wins Third Annual STP Classic

    SIOUX FALLS, SD (July 3) - Mark Kinser passed polesitter Joey
Saldana early in the second lap and led the remaining 29 to win
the Third Annual STP Classic Wednesday before a record crowd at
Huset's Speedway.
    Kinser, who also won the Inaugural STP Classic two years ago,
increased his advantage in the Skoal Outlaw Series points race to
142 points over Dave Blaney. The $6,000 victory was Mark's 12th
this season - his second in four days.
    Blaney, the defending STP Classic and World of Outlaws
champion, finished second for the ninth time this season. He was
also the runner-up in Saturday's Eagle Nationals finale.
    Mark opened the festivities by breaking Husets' one-lap
record. His 10.865-second qualifying run around the high-banked,
3/8-mile oval chopped .244 seconds off the standard Andy
Hillenburg set on August 21, 1992.
    After receiving his 19th EcoWater Quick-Time Award of the
year, Kinser put himself at the rear of the Vivarin Dash field by
picking the #6 inversion pill. Mark was unaffected by the luck of
the draw, however, racing into third place in the seven-lap race
for the right to start the "A" Feature inside the second row.
    Sammy Swindell was leading the Vivarin Dash with the
checkered flag in sight when his #1 ChannnelLock Gambler hooked
the cushion in turn four and flipped. Saldana, a candidate for
1996 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year honors, restarted at the
front of the eight-car field and raced to victory.
    Saldana burst into the lead when the green flag fell in the
main event. Kinser was on the move as well, passing Blaney high
in the fourth corner late in the opening lap and racing around
Saldana for first place in turn two several seconds later.
    "The Buckeye Bullet" steered the #10 Vivarin J&J deep into
the second corner to take over second place the next time around.
Although he chased Mark for the final 28 laps, he was never able
to catch him.
    Jeff Swindell, who fell behind Steve Kinser during the first
lap, passed "The King of the Outlaws" early in lap four and drove
the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim past Saldana for third place the next
time around.
    Kinser caught the backmarkers during the sixth lap, and
increased his advantage as Jeff challenged Blaney for the runner-
up spot.
    Hillenburg made it a three-car battle for second place when
he caught Jeff and "The Buckeye Bullet" in lapped traffic early
in lap nine. Andy blew into second place within two laps,
steering his #2 STP J&J high into the second corner to pass
Swindell early in the 10th lap and Blaney the next time around.
    Mark was a half-straightaway ahead of Hillenburg when a
collision caused Steve Kinser to turn over on the back stretch.
Although his crew allowed him to restart the race by quickly
replacing the top wing on the #11 Quaker State Maxim, the crash
knocked "The King of the Outlaws" out of fifth place.
    Mark raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the
red, and was six car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when
he entered lapped traffic again during lap 17. Hillenburg and
Blaney narrowed the gap when the leader slowed behind a pack of
backmarkers two laps later.
    Kinser broke out of lapped traffic and was a full
straightaway ahead when Blaney passed Hillenburg for the runner-
up spot with eight laps remaining. A front-straightaway collision
with cousin Lance Blevins knocked Hillenburg out of third place
four laps later, however. After his crew quickly changed a radius
rod, Andy restarted the race at the rear of the field and raced
back into 10th place during the final four laps.
    Mark got the jump on Blaney as the race resumed, and took the
checkered flag with "The Buckeye Bullet" racing through turn
three. Jeff Swindell finished in third place, ahead of 14th-
starting Johnny Herrera, Sammy Swindell, Saldana, Jac
Haudenschild, Quaker State Heat Race winners Joe Gaerte and
