PEPSI 400 BUSCH POLE QUALIFYING RAINED-OUT AT DAYTONA

           DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 4) -- Busch Pole Award Qualifying
for Saturday's Pepsi 400 will be completed on Friday morning at 9
a.m. after rain washed out the initial session on Thursday at
Daytona International Speedway.
           Gates will open on Friday at 8 a.m.
           After a rain delay of a little more than 90 minutes,
continuing rain made completion of the first round of qualifying
impossible. Only nine of 43 entries attempted to qualify Thursday
before rain interrupted track activity shortly before 3 p.m.
           Defending Pepsi 400 champion Jeff Gordon blitzed the field as
the eighth car to make an attempt. Gordon's second lap in the
DuPont Refinishes Chevrolet was 188.869 mph.
           Gordon's run far outdistanced previous polesitter Darrell
Waltrip, who ran 186.776 in the Parts America Chevrolet, and third
man Jeff Purvis, who was at 186.474 in the MCA Records Chevy.
           Forty-three cars drew for qualifying positions. Thirty-eight
starters will be locked-in through Busch Qualifying with up to five
additional positions available depending on eligibility.
           NASCAR planned to determine the balance of Friday's schedule
Thursday note and an announcement was planned Friday morning prior
to the resumption of Busch Pole Qualifying.
           Ticket Stubs, accompanied by a rain check from the Speedway,
will be valid for entrance to the grandstands on Friday. Fans who
purchased infield tickets for Thursday's activities can redeem
their tickets for a grandstand seat at the gate on Friday. There
will be no one-day infield tickets sold for Friday's activities.
The infield opens for overnight parking for the Pepsi 400 at 6 p.m.
on Friday.
           Those without tickets to Thursday's action may purchase
tickets to Friday's activities for $6.
           Advance reserved grandstand tickets for the Pepsi 400 will be
available through 5 p.m. Friday for $35-45, and on race day morning
at the gates. General admission tickets to the backstretch Lund
Grandstand will be available on race day for $35. Grandstand gates
open at 7 a.m. on race day. The Pepsi 400 begins at 11 a.m. 
           PEPSI 400 NOTES:
           PETTY, SABATES ANNOUNCE SPLIT: After an eight-year
association, Team SABCO owner Felix Sabates and driver Kyle Petty
have mutually agreed to part ways at the end of the 1996 NASCAR
Winston Cup season. Petty, 36, has driven a Sabates-owned car since
1989, forming the fourth-longest continuous owner-driver
association among active teams.
           "Kyle and I have a lot of mutual respect and love for one
another and I know that Team SABCO will continue to be a winning
organization and Kyle Petty will continue to be a winning Winston
Cup driver," said Sabates in announcing the agreement to split.
           "This is just one of those things that happens to everyone at
one point or another," said Petty. "We have had a lot of great
years but our time together has run its course."
           Petty, while with Team SABCO, has posted 211 starts, six wins,
eight poles, 26 top-fives, 43 top-10s and more than $5.3 million in
winnings. Petty is currently 20th in the 1996 NASCAR Winston Cup
point standings.

PEPSI 400 AND DAYTONA USA ADVANCE NOTES
DAYTONA USA GRAND OPENING
           DAYTONA USA, "The Ultimate Motorsports Attraction," will open
to the public at 8 a.m. Friday. Attraction hours for July and
August will be 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. Adult admission is $10, senior
citizens (60 and over) are $8, children 6-12 are $5 and children
five and under are admitted free with a paying adult.
TICKET AVAILABILITY
           WITH THE ADDITION of seats in the backstretch Lund Tower and
Winston Tower, plenty of reserved garndstand seats remain for
Saturday's Pepsi 400. Price range for reserved seats is $35-45.
Infield tickets go on sale at 6 p.m. Friday. Adult infield
admission is $35 (children 11 and under are admitted free when
accompanied by a paying adult), infield RV parking is $40 and
infield car/van parking is $10. General admission to the Lund
Grandstand will be available Saturday morning at 7 a.m. for $35.
HONORARY OFFICIALS
           GRAND MARSHAL for the Pepsi 400 will be U.S. Congressman John
L. Mica of the East Central Florida 7th Congressional District.
Honorary starter will be John Budzak of the Pepsi-Cola Co. RCA
recording artist Lari White will present the National Anthem.
TELEVISION
           AMONG THE LIVE and taped TV and radio productions featured
this weekend will be:
           ** Busch Pole Award Qualifying for the Pepsi 400, which was
rained out on Thursday and which will set the top 25 positions,
will be live on MRN Radio beginning at 9 a.m. Friday.
           ** The Pepsi 400 will be broadcast live on MRN Radio's more
than 450 nationwide affiliates July 6 at 10:45 a.m.
           ** The Pepsi 400 will be telecast live on ESPN July 6 at 11
a.m. The scheduled three-hour telecast will be preceded by a live,
half-hour edition of NASCAR Today from 10:30-11 a.m. on ESPN2.
           ** The Grand Opening Gala of DAYTONA USA will be replayed on
ESPN2 from 3:30-4:30 a.m. July 5 and from 7:30-8:30 a.m. July 6.
           ** The Pepsi 400 is scheduled to be replayed three times.
Edited versions of the race will be shown from 3:30-5:30 a.m. July
8 and from 1-3 p.m. July 9, both on ESPN. The full event will be
replayed from 7:30-10:30 p.m. July 9 on ESPN2.
           ** "Race Talk Special Edition" with Eli Gold on The Nashville
Network (TNN), July 5, 8-9 p.m. Gold's guest for the telecast from
DAYTONA USA's Velocitorium will be seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup
champion Dale Earnhardt.
           ** "Race Talk" with Eli Gold on TNN, July 6, 6-7 p.m. This
weekly show, featuring guests Bill France, president of NASCAR and
Gary Nelson, NASCAR Winston Cup Series director, will be taped in
the Velocitorium July 5 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
