KYALAMI, ZA: Grant McCleery and Shaun van der Linde shared podium 
honours for rounds 13 and 14 of the AA Fleetcare Super Touring 
Championship run at Kyalami on Saturday, each driver notching up a win 
on a day when the, perhaps, more fancied runners were relegated to 
midfield placings.

McCleery took his Opel Vectra to a largely unchallenged win in the 
first heat, blasting off the line to beat pole man Anthony Taylor 
(Castrol Toyota Camry) to the first corner. From there he steadily 
opened up a gap on the field while Taylor contested second place for 
the first six laps with Shaun van der LindeAs BP Envirocar BMW 318i. 
Braking problems then forced Taylor to concede places allowing Mike 
Briggs (Opel Vectra) to move into third place with Julian Bailey 
(Minolta Toyota Camry) claiming fourth.

Behind them Craig Baird (BMW 318i) came under heavy pressure in the 
closing laps and had to concede fifth place to Terry Moss in the 
Rothmans Audi A4 - both Audis well back on the grid as a result of 
problems with the new Michelin 9C tyres introduced at the East London 
round. 

In the second race Shaun van der Linde made good use of his pole 
position to run away unchallenged to victory with Deon Joubert 
(Motorplan BMW 318i) occupying second place for the duration - just 
reward after being punted off on lap 1 of the first race in a close 
encounter with Briggs. 

From some way behind the two leaders Terry Moss steadily forced his 
Audi closer to the group and was looking to challenge for second when 
Joubert cleverly used a backmarker, forcing the Audi driver to brake 
going down the Mineshaft. This allowed McCleery to sneak through to 
claim third place ahead of Moss with New Zealander Craig Baird (BMW 
318i) in fifth place ahead of Bailey, Taylor and Briggs.

Supporting Races

NGK/VW FORMULA Gti

Morne Jurgens went one step closer to claiming the title for 1996 with 
two decisive wins, taking his Jurgens Truck Centre Swift to the flag 
ahead of Max Corte (Dash Building Materials Swift) in each encounter. 
Stephan Bosman (Genaire Swift) made the scoring simple by finishing 
third both times. In Class B celebrations were a bit delayed when an 
uncharacteristic off in the first heat meant Malcolm Cochrane (File 
Hire Swift) had to come from behind to race through the field to score 
his 13th class win of the season and confirm himself as the 1996 class 
champion.

STANNIC GROUP N

Robby Smith (Firestone BMW 328i) claimed overall victory for the day 
with two victories, the second coming only after Sasol Ford Telstar 
driver Ben Morgenrood raced to the flag but was penalised for jumping 
the start. SmithAs arch-rival in the series Grant van Schalwyk 
(Transtech BMW 328i) finished second for the day ahead of Steve 
Wyndham (Sasol Ford Teslstar).

FORMULA VEE

The Formula Vee series, now more than 30 years old, is being dominated 
by 49-year-old Gawie Gouws who notched up two more wins at Kyalami on 
Saturday, finishing the day ahead of  Anthony Taylor, Symm Grobler and 
Victor Marcon.
