Steve Wins Battle of Kinsers at Eldora

    ROSSBURG, OH (June 15) - Steve Kinser was looking for a role
reversal when the Skoal Outlaw Series - and CBS Sports' television
cameras - visited Eldora Speedway Saturday.
    Kinser, a first-lap crash victim when the World of Outlaws last
raced at Eldora (April 5th), knew it was the opportune time to record
the 21st victory of his career at "The World's Fastest Half-Mile."
    Cousin Mark Kinser hogged the spotlight until two laps remained in
the "A" Feature, breaking the one-lap record, winning the First Quaker
State Heat Race and the Vivarin Dash. Mark led the first 28 laps in
the main event, too, before "The King of the Outlaws" stole the show
with a 29th-lap pass for the victory.
    Mark's 13.159-second qualifying run was .043 seconds faster than
the standard Joey Saldana set on April 5th. Although Saldana was
second-quick Saturday, he was .335 seconds behind Mark's 136.789-
m.p.h. pace. The record-setting lap earned Mark his 16th EcoWater
Quick-Time Award of the year.
    Steve earned the right to start the main event outside the second
row when he followed Mark, Saldana and Jac Haudenschild across the
finish line in the Vivarin Dash.
    Mark drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim into the lead immediately after
the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. He was eight car-lengths ahead
of Saldana when Andy Hillenburg spun in turn four and collided with
Rickey Hood and Daniel Coggeshell late in the third lap.
    Mark opened a 10-car-length advantage within two laps after the
race resumed, and was a half-straightaway ahead of his closest
pursuers when he caught the backmarkers two laps later.
    Dave Blaney, the 11th-fastest qualifier in the 34-car field,
passed six cars during the first 10 laps. He steered the #10 Vivarin
J&J deep into the first corner to pass Saldana for fourth place early
in lap 11.
    Steve passed Haudenschild for the runner-up spot during the 13th
lap, and was gaining on Mark when Kenny Jacobs stopped against the
turn-two retaining wall two laps later. A lapped car lining up between
the Kinser cousins on the ensuing restart allowed Mark to put five
car-lengths between himself and Steve within two laps.
    Steve caught Mark during the 18th lap, only to have his move into
the lead delayed when his #11 Quaker State Maxim hit the turn-two
retaining wall early in the next lap. The impact caused his right rear
wheel to collapse, which allowed air to trickle from the tire. World
of Outlaws officials determined the right rear wheel to be an inch
narrower than its original width after inspecting it in victory lane.
    Mark was approaching lapped traffic again when Blaney stopped in
the first corner with a broken rear end and damaged drive line, the
result of a collision with the wall in turn three, seconds earlier.
    As the race resumed, a bolt in the bird cage holding the right
rear radius rod on the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim broke, sending
Johnny Herrera to the work area and further delaying the restart. As
Steve's right rear tire cooled, it lost more and more air pressure. It
might have gone flat had Herrera's crew members not told Skoal Outlaw
Series officials they couldn't fix the problem and to restart the race
after only one caution lap.
    Steve's inability to pick up speed quickly allowed Mark to put 15
car-lengths between them within three laps after the green flag
replaced the yellow. But as the #11 gained speed, it gained air
pressure, allowing Steve to narrow the gap to just two car-lengths by
lap 27.
    Steve caught Mark in the fourth corner the next time around, and
executed the winning pass with a low move into turn one with 1 3/4
laps remaining. Having taken the lead with plenty of air pressure in
his right rear tire, "The King of the Outlaws" raced away from the
field and took the checkered flag with 10 car-lengths to spare.
    "On that caution, I realized my right rear tire was going flat,"
Kinser told the standing-room-only crowd from victory lane. "I really
wanted to get the race going again so I could build air pressure back
in the tire. I couldn't get going that quickly, and Mark pulled away.
But once I got pressure back in the tire, I was able to run him down."
    Haudenschild held off hard-charging Sammy Swindell for third
place. Completing the top 10 in the World of Outlaws' 27th event of
the year were Stevie Smith, Jacobs, Saldana, Butch Schroeder, Randy
Kinser and Byron Reed.
    CBS televised the race during its CBS Sports Show Sunday
