MANN TO THE FORE

Johan Smith (Ray 92) and Basil Mann (Riken Electric Swift RF92) each 
claimed top honours in East London at the weekend in the two heat 
seventh round of the VW/NGK Formula GTi Championship on a day in which 
log leader Morne Jurgens struggled to defend his position.

However, with Garth Waberski having withdrawn from the championship, 
Jurgen's solitary venture into the points in the second race netted 
him six points, enough to keep him well in the lead. 

Johan Smith won the first race from Max Corte (Dash Building Material 
Swift 92) and Basil Mann. The second race was one of attrition with 
Mann eventually winning the tense encounter from Jurgens - the pair 
the only two Class A cars to survive the 10 laps. Class B log leader 
Malcolm Cochrane (File Plant Hire Swift 91) drove superbly to take 
third ahead of Denis Montgomery's DAW Mk1.

NEW LEADER

The Sasol Formula Ford Championship gained a new leader in East London 
at the weekend when Marc Gleed (Swift 94) scored a second and first 
place in the two heats to topple Grant Orbell (Van Diemen RF94), the 
latter retiring five laps into the second race after having won the 
first race of the day.

Gleed now has 71 points to the 68 of Orbell with Toby Scheckter (Swift 
SC96) maintaining station in third place with 38 points.
