NEWS FROM THE AUTO TRADER RAC
TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP
Official Testing: Snetterton, 14/6/96
THE Volvo team suffered a further blow at Snetterton this afternoon
(Fri) in final official testing for Sunday's twin rounds of the Auto
Trader RAC Touring Car Championship. For although Swede
Rickard Rydell finished the day on top of the timesheets, his young
British team-mate Jamie Davies destroyed his car in a roll-over
accident.
Davies -- drafted into the Volvo squad from Formula 3 to stand in for
the injured Kelvin Burt -- was knocked unconscious in the crash but
was otherwise unharmed. He was likely to be taken to hospital for X-
rays as a precautionary measure.
His Volvo 850 racer was a write-off and is highly unlikely to be
repaired in time for Sunday's rounds 11 and 12 of the UK's premier
race series.
Rydell's top test time was more than half a second inside his own
qualifying record for the Norfolk track, and seven-hundredths quicker
than his nearest rival, Italian BMW pilot Roberto Ravaglia, could
achieve. Championship leader Frank Biela was only 12th fastest,
outpaced by his team-mate John Bintcliffe.
