Mark Kinser Comes Back Strong at Canandaigua

    CANANDAIGUA, NY (June 5) - What a difference a day can make.
    Twenty-four hours after blowing two engines and failing to finish
a Skoal Outlaw Series "A" Feature for the first time this year, Mark
Kinser was basking in victory lane at Canandaigua Speedway Wednesday.
    The scene at Canandaigua was similar to the seven other visits to
victory lane the World of Outlaws points leader has made in what is
turning into a career-best season for the 1984 Rookie of the Year.
    Mark opened the fourth leg of the Skoal Outlaw Series' annual
five-track tour of New York by claiming his 14th EcoWater Quick-Time
Award of the season. His 15.023-second qualifying lap was only .124
seconds off the one-lap record Stevie Smith set three years ago.
    Then he picked the #4 inversion pill, which put Steve Kinser on
the pole of the Vivarin Dash. "The King of the Outlaws" won the five-
lap race for the right to start the "A" Feature on the pole. Mark, who
also won the First Quaker State Heat Race, finished the Vivarin Dash
in third place and started the main event behind his cousin.
    "We were a little off in the dash," Mark said. "In our heat race,
we bottomed out and shoved the radiator back into the motor. We had to
fix that, so we didn't have any time to make any changes on the car.
When we did get a chance to work on the car, it was good."
    Steve and outside polesitter Billy Pauch raced wheel-to-wheel down
the front straightaway just seconds after the green flag fell in the
main event. Kinser surged ahead with a low move into the first corner,
but Pauch took the high line through turn two and won a back-stretch
drag race to lead first lap.
    Pauch, who won Tuesday's "A" Feature at Rolling Wheels Raceway,
was three car-lengths ahead of Steve when Mark passed Sammy Swindell
for third place deep in turn four late in the third lap.
    The leader was catching the backmarkers while Mark challenged
Steve for the runner-up spot early in lap five. After making a run at
Steve high in turn two, Mark came back with another in the third
corner and took over second place seconds later.
    Mark caught Pauch immediately after passing Steve, and challenged
him for two laps before taking the lead with a low move through dense
lapped traffic in the second corner.
    Steve relegated Pauch to third place two laps later, steering the
#11 Quaker State Maxim through the backmarkers and by Billy "The Kid"
deep in turn four.
    Mark was a half-straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers during
the 10th lap when he caught another pack of backmarkers. He was
breaking through the heavy traffic three laps later when an ignition
problem in the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim caused Jeff Swindell to stop in
the second corner.
    The red flag was flying before a full lap of green-flag racing was
completed, as Johnny Herrera turned the #47 Casey's General Stores
Maxim on its side in turn two. His crew changed the car's Jacob's
ladder quickly, allowing Herrera to restart the race at the back of
the pack. He raced back into 15th place during the final 12 laps.
    Although no lapped cars separated the leaders in the restart
lineup, Mark drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim away from Steve as the race
resumed. He was a half-straightaway ahead of the field three laps
later when Dave Blaney started battling Joe Gaerte for fifth place.
    Smith, who started the main event back on the ninth row, followed
"The Buckeye Bullet" by Gaerte to take over sixth place with eight
laps remaining.
    The final seven laps brought back memories of the classic battles
between Steve and Sammy. Swindell caught Kinser early in the 19th lap,
but fell behind when he allowed the #1 ChannelLock Gambler to hit the
outside retaining wall on the front straightaway. They were chasing
Mark into lapped traffic two laps later when Sammy caught Steve again.
Swindell took over the runner-up spot with a low move into the third
corner with three laps remaining, only to have Steve return the favor
with a fourth-corner pass as they were heading for the checkered flag.
    "We're glad to be back here in victory lane," said Mark, who also
won a Skoal Outlaw Series "A" Feature at Canandaigua in 1993. "The
caution and the red kept us from getting into much lapped traffic."
    Smith drove the #71M EcoWater Systems Maxim past Pauch and Blaney
during the final two laps to claim fourth place. Sixteenth-starting
Andy Hillenburg finished seventh, ahead of Gaerte and Third Quaker
State Heat Race winner Greg Hodnett.
    Although Jeff Swindell came back to finish 10th, he dropped into
fifth place in the point standings as Steve Kinser moved to third. WoO
