SKILLMAN WINS FIRST ANDERSON LM MAIN,
MA NATURE ENDS NIGHT EARLY

ANDERSON, Ind. (June 1) The Anderson Speedway management tried to hustle
things along Saturday night, but the expected rain moved in on lap 11 of
the Street Stock A main.

Doug Greig captured the 50 lap Open Competition Figure-8 feature. Grieg,
fast timer, passed leader Duane Lee on lap 37. Lee spun later as he
fought to control his ill-handling machine. R.J. Norton took second
ahead of Charlie Coles, Jerry Brawner, Lee and Scott Fields.

Orie Parkhurst looked headed for his first Hoosier Park Late Model 25
lap feature win this year, but Vic Hellis spun him out of the lead on
lap 15. Hellis blamed lapped traffic for the contact, as three cars
struggling to stay on the leader's lap bottled things up. Both cars
were sent to the tail, leaving Ray Skillman in the lead. The three
tail-enders were taken out just three laps later. Barry Jackson, making
his first 1996 appearance, laid down some liquid and sent Jerry Stewart
and Tom Flynn into the fence. All were finished. Defending Hoosier
Park LM champ Jim Cooper tried every trick in the book, but could not
overhaul Skillman. Ray took the win over Cooper, Bobby Fields, William
Mefford and Al Grogg. B. Fields and Tim Neal won heat races.

Had the 20 lap Street Stock "A" main gone trouble free, the night may
have not been awash. Several cars crashed off of turn two on the start.
Benny Blevins' Nova rolled on to its top before settling on its side.
On the restart, John McGee took the lead. His car spun on lap 3 giving
the lead to Brian Brock. Brock held off challenges from James Gann and
Dennis Wallen. The rain began to pick up in its intensity. Defending
points champ Chris Bair tried a move on lap 11 to squeeze between Brock
and the backstretch wall. The move put both machines in to the turn
three fence, quite hard. The red came out with Gann in the lead. It
appeared that James would secure his first ever win. As the fans were
leaving the stands, it was announced that the race scoring must revert
to the last scored lap (lap 10). At press time, Brock was awarded the
win over Bair, Gann, Wayne Young and Wallen. The B-Main was the only
casualty - it will be the first race, on next week's card. Gann, McGee,
Brian McVey and Jerry Swinford, Jr. won heat races.

 ANDERSON, Indiana ---The I-CAR Modified traveling series will visit
the Anderson Speedway this Saturday night. These cars are somewhat less
expensive to race (than other classes) and can be taken all over the
Nation. Michigan driver Ken Kropf captured the May event. Local star Joe
Beaver (Noblesville) will be back in action, after taking an I-CAR tour
win in Michigan a few weeks back. Desoto's father and son team of Rick
and Rusty Rhonemus will be in action as well as Indianapolis driver Tim
Taylor.

 The Hoosier Park Late Models is the top class competing on a regular
basis at the track. They are called stock cars, yet there is nothing on
the cars stock. The bodies, normally formed from aluminum or fiberglass
bear little or no resemblance to a passenger car. Those differences
aside, the class is extremely exciting and fast. Anderson's Jim Cooper
captured the 1995 title over fellow hometowner Ray Fullen.

 The Figure-8 class is one of the best in the country. Rich Boyer
(Anderson), who has nearly won the points title the last few years,
looks to be in good shape. Anderson's Herb Rose has taken two feature
wins.

 Chris Bair (Anderson) captured last year's Street Stock points
war. Anderson drivers Wayne Young and Rob Hazelbaker, along with
Markleville's Dennis Wallen have captured feature events so far. Young
has also broken the track record. Race fans will get an extra feature
this week! The June 1st B-Feature was canceled due to rain. It will be
ran as the first race this week.
