Mark Turns Tables on Sammy at Lincoln

    NEW OXFORD, PA (June 1) - The Kinser/Swindell rivalry took an
interesting turn Saturday when the Skoal Outlaw Series invaded Lincoln
Speedway. This time, it wasn't Steve versus Sammy, but Mark and Sammy.
    Three days before, at Grandview Speedway, Sammy passed Mark for
the lead late in the 14th lap and cruised to victory. Mark, the leader
in the World of Outlaws point standings, returned the favor Saturday
with an inside move in the third corner en route to his seventh "A"
Feature victory of the year.
    "I'd like to thank my dad (Karl) and the crew," Mark told the
capacity crowd from victory lane. "They gave me a great car tonight."
    Swindell opened the festivities by pacing the qualifying session
with a 13.867-second lap. After receiving his third EcoWater Quick-
Time Award of the season, he put himself on the pole of the Vivarin
Dash by picking the #0 inversion pill. But it was Mark who earned the
pole position in the 30-lap main event, winning the five-lap race from
inside the third row.
    There were more ironic twists to follow in the "A" Feature. Mark
burst into the lead as the green flag fell, only to have Sammy steer
his #1 ChannelLock Gambler deep into the second corner to pass him.
    Kinser was challenging Swindell for the lead late in the second
lap when Greg Hodnett and the #11H Selma Shell J&J flipped in turn
two. Steve Kinser, who fell behind Andy Hillenburg during the first
lap, returned to fifth place as the green flag replaced the red.
    Sammy opened a five-car-length advantage within three laps after
the race resumed, only to have Mark catch him two laps later. The
leaders were entering lapped traffic as Dave Blaney and Steve Kinser
passed Kevin Gobrecht for third and fourth place, respectively, during
the ninth lap.
    While Blaney and "The King of the Outlaws" battled Mark for the
runner-up spot, Swindell blew through lapped traffic with ease and put
a half-straightaway between himself and his closest pursuers within
one lap.
    Johnny Herrera brought out the caution flag late in the 11th lap
when he took the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim for a spin in turn
two. Within seconds after the green flag replaced the yellow, Gobrecht
and Brian Paulus spun to a stop in the same spot.
    Mark challenged Sammy for two laps after the race resumed before
steering the #5M Wirtgen Maxim deep into the third corner to take the
lead. He slid in front of Swindell to keep him from returning the
favor and opened a five-car-length margin within two laps.
    Steve was battling "The Buckeye Bullet" for third place during the
17th lap when Mark caught the backmarkers again. With dense lapped
traffic looming ahead, Swindell, Blaney and Steve caught Mark early in
the 18th lap, and they raced nose-to-tail all the way around the D-
shaped, 4/10-mile oval.
    Blaney took the low line through the first corner to pass Swindell
for second place, then raced wheel-to-wheel with Mark in turn two the
next time around. Steve out-dragged Sammy down the front straightaway
to take over third place early in lap 20.
    Mark was five car-lengths ahead of Blaney when Swindell regained
third place. In his haste to catch Sammy, Steve allowed the #11 Quaker
State Maxim to clip the outside guard rail on the front straightaway
with eight laps remaining. Although his right rear tire was losing air
pressure, Steve continued to chase Swindell.
    "The Buckeye Bullet" was challenging Mark in heavy lapped traffic
when the #07 Garrett Company J&J driven by Dave Haight started dumping
oil on one of its headers, causing a fire. Then Haight crashed into
the first-corner retaining wall, bringing out the red flag. Steve's
right rear tire lost all of its air pressure as he was lining up to
restart the race. Cris Eash also stopped before the green flag fell,
giving Steve's crew an opportunity to replace the tire.
    Steve restarted the race at the back of the pack and raced into
16th place, while Mark cruised to an eight-car-length victory. Blaney
was the runner-up for the second time in as many nights. Swindell held
off "B" Feature winner Joe Gaerte for third place. Completing the top
10 in the World of Outlaws' 20th event of the year were Hillenburg,
Jac Haudenschild, Third Quaker State Heat Race winner Jeff Swindell,
Donnie Kreitz, Jr., 18th-starting Stevie Smith and Gobrecht. WoO
