Sammy Swindell Takes Grandview Feature

    BECHTELSVILLE, PA (May 29) - Sammy Swindell's emotional roller-
coaster just keeps rolling along.
    Although the two-time Skoal Outlaw Series champion has led more
laps than anybody except points leader Mark Kinser, he has crashed out
of the lead in three races. He chased Mark around Grandview Speedway
for 13 laps Wednesday night before taking the lead and cruising to his
second victory in a World of Outlaws "A" Feature this season.
    "The ChannelLock car was working well tonight," Swindell told the
capacity crowd from victory lane. "We got off to a bad start because
the engine was cold, but we knew we could get it back. We just ran a
nice, easy race."
    It was anything but a nice and easy night for "King of the
Outlaws" Steve Kinser. After finishing third in the First Quaker State
Heat Race, he earned the right to start the 30-lap main event on the
front row by following Mark across the finish line in the Vivarin
Dash. He was trying to catch his cousin late in the third lap when the
#11 Quaker State Maxim slid over the cushion in turn three, hit the
retaining wall and flipped into the fourth corner. It was the third
consecutive race Kinser had a car destroyed in a crash.
    Long before the unfortunate incident, Kinser opened the
festivities by chopping more than .6 seconds off the one-lap record he
set last May 30th, circling the high-banked, 1/3-mile oval in 12.034.
The record-breaking effort earned him his fifth EcoWater Quick-Time
Award of the season.
    Mark burst into the lead while Jac Haudenschild and Stevie Smith
relegated Swindell to fifth place as the green flag fell in the "A"
Feature. Sammy passed "The Wild Child" the next time around, then
moved into third place when Kinser crashed.
    "I didn't see Steve's crash," Swindell said. "All I know is that
everybody did a good job of getting through it. The red allowed us to
make some changes on the car."
    Although Second Quaker State Heat Race winner Billy Pauch started
inside the fourth row, he passed Haudenschild and followed Swindell by
Smith within two laps after the main event resumed.
    The dense lapped traffic Mark caught during the sixth lap gave
Sammy a chance to narrow the gap. He dropped into the low groove and
caught the leader during the 10th lap.
    "I felt like I could run with Mark," Swindell said. "I was just
hoping we could catch him in lapped traffic."
    Sammy took the lead with an inside move into turn four late in the
14th lap. He was racing away from the field when Johnny Herrera and
First Quaker State Heat Race winner Fred Rahmer collided in the fourth
corner and brought out the caution flag three laps later.
    Pauch raced into third place following the 17th-lap restart and
challenged Mark for the runner-up spot throughout the remainder of the
race. Swindell quickly built a comfortable advantage and was 10 car-
lengths ahead when he took the checkered flag.
    The $6,000 victory, coupled with Joe Gaerte's 10th-place run,
pushed Swindell into seventh place in the Skoal Outlaw Series point
standings.
    "Sammy just plain outran us; he had the better car tonight," Mark
admitted. "I saw on the board that Pauch was third and I thought we
might finish third because we've run third every time we've been
here."
    Mark kept the #5M Wirtgen Maxim ahead of Pauch and finished second
for the fourth time this year.
    "We tightened the car up on the red," Pauch said. "I thought we
might get a shot in lapped traffic, but it never happened.
    "I've got a little more experience on this track, but it doesn't
make up for all the races these guys run."
    Rounding out the top 10 in the World of Outlaws' 18th "A" Feature
of the year were Smith, Dave Blaney, "B" Feature winner Jeff Swindell,
Greg Hodnett, Andy Hillenburg, 13th-starting Danny Lasoski and Gaerte.
    The Grandview event was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but
torrential rains made the track unsafe for racing. WoO
