LYN ST. JAMES NAMED GRAND MARSHAL 
OF THE FIRST UNION SIX HOURS

 
 WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- Lyn St. James knows what it's like to accept a trophy in
Watkins Glen's Victory Circle. At the conclusion of the June 7-9 First Union
Six Hours of the Glen, she'll be giving the trophies away. 
 St. James has been named Grand Marshal for the opening event on the 1996
Watkins Glen International schedule, the First Union Six Hours of the Glen
Presented by Acxiom. The weekend features a six-hour race for the International
Motor Sports Association Exxon World SportsCars and Exxon Supreme GT classes.
 St. James has had many great moments at the Glen. She became the first -- and
only -- woman to score a solo triumph in IMSA competition, driving a Ford
Mustang to a GTO victory in the 1985 Watkins Glen New York 500.
 She finished third overall in the 1984 New York 500, sharing a Ford Argo
prototype with Howdie Holmes, and co-drove to fourth with NASCAR's Awesome Bill
Elliott in the 1985 Camel Continental GTO race.
 This weekend, Lyn's work will not be finished after she presents the winner's
trophy in Victory Circle to the winners of the First Union Six Hours of the
Glen. She is spokesperson for an all-woman team that will be competing in One
Lap of America. Alice Ridpath, Sunny Hobbs, Stacy Fountain and Vickie
Kinder-Fritz will co-drive a new Mercury Mountaineer. Lyn has been a consumer
advisor and spokesperson for the Ford Motor Company, a role she has enjoyed
since 1981.
 Lyn's exploits extend far beyond the Glen. She has set 31 national and
international speed records over her 20 year career. She co-drove to a GTO
class victory in the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 1987 and 1990, and was on the
winning GTO team in the 1991 12 Hours of Sebring. 
 In recent years, she has concentrated on Indy Car racing. She competed in the
Indianapolis 500 for the past five years, finishing 13th in last weekend's
event. She was Indy 500 Rookie of the Year in 1992, when she finished ninth.
 Lyn's involvement with motorsports extends far beyond driving. She was
president of the Women's Sports Foundation from 1990-93, she founded the Lyn
St. James Foundation in 1993, and was the recipient of the 1995 Touchstone
Award. A television commentator for ABC, ESPN and Showtime, St. James is the
author of The Lyn St. James Car Owner's Manual.
 Practice for the First Union Six Hours of the Glen begins at noon on Friday,
June 7. Saturday's schedule includes qualifying for all three classes, followed
by a three-hour IMSA Endurance Championship race at 2 p.m. Sunday opens with a
40-minute debut of the new IMSA Slick 50 Pro Series at the Glen. The First
Union Six Hours of the Glen starts at 11 a.m. Wrapping up the schedule will be
the start of One Lap of America, with competitors opening the 4,500-mile rally
by taking a two-lap time trial, starting at 6 p.m.
