Ralf Schumacher seems to find the qualifying pace at last as
the German placed his Reynard on the first ever pole in his
Formula Nippon campaign.

His teammate Naoki Hattori is not far behind in second.

Japanese ace Toranosuke Takagi was perplexed that he couldn't
find the straight-line speed. He was disappointed to miss 
the Special Stage (the top 6 in the first qualifying are given 
five extra laps in a separate session to better or defend 
their positions. Only the fastest lap counts for the final grid.) 

For the reigning champ Suzuki, qualifying in the ninth row is
nothing but humiliation. He complained of ill-handling.
