NOTES:
-First 19 drivers within one second.
-24 drivers went faster today (Saturday) than on Friday (not improving on
their fastest laps were Tony Renna, Steven Rikert and Carlos Bonetti).
-This is Fredrik Larsson's second (and consecutive) pole of 1996.
-First time this year that Phil Hill's son Derek is starting on the front row.
-Last year in this race, Tim Moser improved the most position in the race,
starting 18th and finishing 8th. Moser is second in points (10 behind) to
Larsson.
LARSSON QUOTE: Asked to attribute his recent success (two-race win streak,
first in points): "Last year I wanted it so much, I think I was guilty of
overdriving. This year, I am smoother, calmer, not sliding around. And now, of
course, I am very comfortable with rolling starts. And here, the draft is of
no consequence. In fact, if you get right up behind someone, you lose all the
air; it is then like driving a car with no wings at all."
