NASPORT-West~Round One~Thunderhill Motorsports Park~19 May 1996


JOHN GODDARD of Oakland, CA (#6 Vallejo Nissan/Red Line Oil Nissan 240SX) led
from flag to flag at Thunderhill Motorsports Park in Willows, CA to win the
first of seven races this year in the tenth season of NASPORT-West, the
national sports sedan series based on the West Coast. Perennial Runner-Up FRANK
HONSOWETZ of El Segundo, CA (#8 Creative Endeavors Nissan 240SX) assumed the
position by taking second overall and in the GT-3 class, and Rookie CHUCK
McKINNEY of Pleasant Hill, CA (#28 Inn of Lancaster Nissan 240SX) finished
third overall and in GT-3 class, in his first-ever NASPORT race.

STEVE COOK of Santa Clara, CA set a new GT4 race record with a time of
l:20.313-the only NASPORT record set this weekend.   Cook, whose #48 Foreign
Affair Honda CRX was newly reclassified this year down from GT3 to GT4, passed
GT4 pole-sitter Olsen midway through the race and held on for his win in
NASPORT competition.  Third place in GT4 went to Rookie JIM NEALON of Campbell,
CA (#42 Nissan Sentra) in his first-ever NASPORT race.

The half-hour race was relatively problem-free with no 23 green flag laps. 
Defending GT4 Champion Olsen spun off chasing GT4 leader Cook but mainted his
runner-up position, and an fluid leak on his rear tires caused ERNIE DE JACOMO
of Fontana, CA (Moran Motorsports Nissan 240SX) to spin off twice before he
pitted and two charging GT4 competitors-DEREK ISRAEL of Oakland, CA (#41 Datsun
510) and JOHN LEASE of Stockton, CA (#3 Parts House VW Rabbit) had body
contact, but both continued at the time.  Israel later pitted to save his
motor.

Season's-opener hiccups and new-car gremlins plagued several veterans including
JEFF SCOVILLE of Corvallis,OR (#81 Jack Scoville Ltd Nissan 240SX) whose
differential kept him on the starting grid, LARRY HANSEN of Eureka, CA (#99 Six
River Bank/Eureka HS Auto Shop Class Nissan 240SX) who blew a suspension rod
end after four laps, MIKE GUIVER of Phoenix, AZ (#91 Alliance Wholesale Lbr
Nissan 240SX) whose engine went away,  De Jacomo of  who also suffered engine
woes, and NASPORT-newcomer Israel of  whose crushed exhaust plagued him until
he DNF'd on lap 13 of the 23 lap race.

Points-wise, leading GT3 Drivers are Goddard, Honsowetz and McKinney with
Nissan leading the Manufacturer's Points and McKinney leading the Rookie
Points;leading  GT4 Drivers are Cook, Olsen and Nealon with Honda leading
Nissan in the Manufacturer's Points; and Nealon leading the Rookie Points.

Round Two will be Memorial Day weekend at Willow Springs Raceway in the
California desert.
