Larsson Master at Nazareth

NAZARETH, Pa. (May 18) - In the Barber Dodge Pro Series' first visit to
Nazareth Speedway, Sweden's Fredrik Larsson won his second race in a row
(third career) by fending off his on-the-road roommate Thomas Schie
of Norway. Derek Hill, son of F1 champion Phil Hill, was third, his
first Barber Dodge  podium, in the 50-lap Saturday feature race.
     Fun as it is to drive, there is very little room to pass on Roger
Penske's funky .96-mile "five turn" oval, and the Larsson/Schie/Hill
finishing order was how they had gridded up. Twenty-five drivers
qualified, with the first 19 within one second; in the race 14 drivers
finished on the lead lap.
     Larsson took the lead at the start and was never headed, though
Schie and Hill had two chances to make runs on re-starts, the last of
which was a two-lap "dash for cash." But Larsson said he had a "perfect
car, though it was a little loose at the end," and comfortably motored
to a .936-second win over Schie. Larsson had relatively little trouble
with lapped traffic, though the
nose of his Barber Dodge blackened by a large tire mark, but fourth-
and fifth-starters Andres Gomez and Jeff Willoughby crashed hard in
Turn Three while trying to get around a backmarker. Both were unhurt.
     Tim Moser, tied with Larsson in points coming into Nazareth, diced
mightily with Jeff Bucknum, Seiji Ara, Rino Mastronardi (from 14th,
the Most Progressive Driver) and Tony Renna behind the leaders to take
fourth and thus slipped nine tallies behind Larsson, while Bryan
"Steady" Selby now lies third.
     Round Five is Monday, May 27 at Lime Rock Park, where last year
Larsson gathered up his first Barber Dodge podium (third place).
