NASCAR WINSTON CUP NOTES OF INTEREST

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --- NASCAR of officials Sunday fined Robin 
Pemberton, crew chief for the No. 2 Penske South Ford, $25,000 after the 
car of driver Rusty Wallace, winner of Sunday's SaveMart Supermarkets 
300 at Scars Point Raceway in California, was found to be 3/16ths of an 
inch too low at the roof height in post-race inspection.
Officials did not believe the offense was intentional, after 
finding a damaged right rear shock and a right front jack plate. Still, 
a fine was assessed because there was an infraction.

*** With his win Sunday, Wallace became just the second driver 
in eight races at Sears Point to win more than once. Wallace's first win 
came in 1990 in the second race at the Point, which was his last road 
course win before Sunday. Ernie Irvan is the other driver to win twice 
at Sears Point, in 1992 and '94. It was Wallace's sixth win on a road 
course overall --- two each at Riverside, Sears Point and Watkins Glen.

*** Wallace also became the second driver to win in two 
different car makes. Wallace won in 1990 driving a Pontiac and he was 
wheeling a Ford Sunday. Irvan won in a Chevrolet in 1992 and a Ford in 
1994.

*** In not winning from the Busch Pole, Terry Labonte kept 
intact the mark of only one driver winning from the pole at Sears Point. 
That was Irvan 1994.

*** Sunday's race was the second consecutive fifth-place finish 
at Sears Point for Labonte.

*** Sunday's race was the third straight top-five finish for 
Dale Earnhardt at Sears Point. in fact, he has finished no lower than 
fourth during that time.

*** Sunday's race marked the second time in three years Wally 
Dallenbach Jr., drove to a top-five finish at Sears Point.

*** Mark Martin finished second Sunday for the second straight 
year at Sears Point. He was runner-up to Earnhardt a year ago.

*** Sunday marked only the second time in eight races at Sears 
Point that Ricky Rudd failed to finish in the top five. Hiss average 
finish at the 2.52-mile road course remains highest among all drivers, 
however, at 4.75
 

*** Wallace's two wins so far this season give him 43 for his 
NASCAR Winston Cup career. That's three  short of tying Buck Baker for 
11th on the all-time list.

*** Although Wallace now is the king of road courses with an 
unprecedented six NASCAR Winston Cup wins on those types of circuits, 
Sunday was his first top-five finish on a road course since finishing 
fifth at Sears Point in 1994.

*** Labonte now has led in eight of the 10 races run this 
season, for 561 laps and 664.:58 miles. The miles led is tops on the 
NASCAR Winston Cup tour and the laps led are second to teammate Jeff 
Gordon's 726.

*** Risk Mast and Tommy Kendall Sunday added their names to tile 
list of drivers leading at least one lap through 10 races this season, 
bringing the total to 34.

*** Through 10 races, Earnhardt has completed all but 6.62 of a 
possible 3,480.99 miles run.

*** Through 10 races this season, the top 10 in the Series 
standings looks this way: Dale Earnhardt, 1,556 Dale Jarrett, 1,441 
Terry Labonte, 1,425 Jeff Gordon, 1,369 Sterling Marlin, 1 293: Ricky 
Rudd, 1,289: Rusty Wallace, 1,255 Ricky Craven, 1,244 Ted Musgrave, 
1,230 Ken Schrader, 1,206.

*** A year ago, the points looked like this: Dale Earnhardt, 
1,494 Mark Martin, 1,485 Jeff Gordon, 1,479 Sterling Marlin, 1,398 Ted 
Musgrave, 1,338 Rusty Wallace, 1,291 Dale Jarrett, 1,233 Bobby Hamilton, 
1,222 Terry Labonte, 1,204 and Morgan Shepherd, 1,177. Eight of the 10 
are back again this year.
