Mark Kinser Makes it Two Straight at I-80

    GREENWOOD, NE (May 3) - Mark Kinser continued his dominance of I-
80 Speedway when a near-capacity crowd welcomed the Skoal Outlaw
Series back for its Friday finale at the semi-banked, 4/10-mile oval.
     Mark, who set the track's one-lap record while winning the World
of Outlaws' inaugural event at I-80 last May, passed outside
polesitter Sammy Swindell late in the 23rd lap and led the final
eight laps for his third "A" Feature victory of the season.
     Mark, the victim of a power failure late in Thursday's
Preliminary Feature, won the Third Heat Race and started Friday's
main event inside the fourth row. He passed Second Heat Race winner
Andy Hillenburg as Swindell raced past Vivarin Dash winner Steve
Kinser high in turn four as the green flag fell in the 30-lap race.
     Steve steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the high groove in
turn four and raced wheel-to-wheel with Swindell late in the second
lap, but was unable to execute the pass. He drifted a little too high
on the front straightaway the next time around, and bumped the
outside retaining wall. Despite breaking a couple of bead lock bolts
and damaging the right rear tire on the #11 Quaker State Maxim, "The
King of the Outlaws" continued chasing Swindell.
     Mark took the high line through the second corner to take fifth
place from fast-qualifier Johnny Herrera five laps into the race.
Sammy caught the backmarkers with a four-car-length advantage the
next time around.
     As Steve and Sammy battled for the lead in dense lapped traffic,
Mark passed Danny Lasoski early in the eighth lap, and steered the
#5M Wirtgen Maxim deep into turn four to pass "The Buckeye Bullet"
for third place later in the lap.
     With Steve's right rear tire losing pressure, Mark was able to
reel him in quickly. He passed his cousin for the runner-up spot with
a low move through the second corner midway through the race.
     Swindell almost lost the lead late in the 17th lap when Randy
Hannagan took the #75 Mopar Maxim for a 360 spin right in front of
the leader between turns three and four. Sammy narrowly missed hitting 
the outside retaining wall when he took the high line around Hannagan.
     Mark dropped into the low groove in his pursuit of the leader,
while Sammy drove the #1 ChannelLock Gambler around the rim. Kinser
caught Swindell late in the 19th lap, and passed him deep in turn one
seconds later. Mark slid up into the high groove after completing the
pass, allowing Sammy to return the favor with a low move into the
third corner.
     Kinser and Swindell were in the heat of battle when Steve
stopped in turn three with a flat right rear tire late in lap 22.
Mark roared through the low groove in the third corner as the green
flag replaced the yellow, but Sammy was equal to the challenge.
     Mark chased Swindell around the track once more before taking
the lead with a low move into turn four late in the 23rd lap.
     Mark was enjoying a comfortable advantage four laps later when
Aaron Berryhill stopped in turn one and brought out the caution flag.
Mark raced away from the 24-car field when the race resumed, and was
10 car-lengths ahead of Swindell when he took the checkered flag.
     Sammy, Lasoski and Blaney finished 2-3-4 for the second straight
night at I-80. Steve Kinser raced back through the field to claim
fifth place. Rounding out the top 10 in the "A" Feature were
Hillenburg, Herrera, 17th-starting Jac Haudenschild, Jeff Swindell
and Joey Saldana.
     The $9,000 victory, Mark's second in as many events, increased
his advantage to 32 points over cousin Steve in the World of Outlaws
point standings. WoO
