SUNDAY, APR 28, 1996 CALDER PARK MOTOR RACEWAY, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA...
Team Castrol number two driver Russell Ingall was the Surprise overall
winner of round 6 of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championships at
Melbourne's Calder Park.
Ingall who has returned to Australia after a successful overseas career
won one heat and took two seconds to take the round from Ford drivers John
Bowe and Glen Seton.
HEAT ONE
"Das Wunderkid" Craig Lowndes won the first heat of the 3 heat contest
from pole in his new high tech factory Holden Commodore with Ingall taking
second and Bowe third. Local hero Peter Brock had a race long battle with
Ford veteran Dick Johnson with Brock grabbing fourth before spinning put
with only a handful of laps to go.. Glen Seton retired after his Ford
Credit Racing Ford Falcon dropped a cylinder early in the heat leaving the
team with a rapid engine change for heat two.
HEAT TWO
Russell Ingall won his first ever Shell Australian Touring Car
Championships race after a lightning start and car problems from Lowndes.
John Bowe just held of the Falcon of Queenslander Tony Longhurst from
Wayne Gardner, Glen Seton, and rookie privateer Steven Richards.
HEAT THREE
Seton made a blinding start from fifth to grab the lead in the final heat.
He was never headed and won from Ingall, his team leader Larry Perkins,
Bowe, Brock and Longhurst.
