Mark Kinser Completes Sweep of Knoxville Event

    KNOXVILLE, IA (April 27) - During his 14 championship seasons with
the Skoal Outlaw Series, Karl Kinser became accustomed to sweeping
double-feature events. Last year, his first with son Mark as his
driver, Karl's team won the Preliminary and "A" Feature races in the
same event twice.
    Knoxville Raceway welcomed Mark and the #5M Wirtgen Maxim into
victory lane for the second consecutive night Saturday following his
flag-to-flag victory in the 25-lap "A" Feature.
    The $9,000 victory, Mark's second in a World of Outlaws main event
this season, increased his lead in the point standings to 26 over
cousin Steve Kinser.
    Mark, who also led every lap in Friday's Preliminary Feature,
started Saturday's Vivarin Dash on the pole and led every lap for the
right to start the main event inside the front row. Steve, who
finished sixth in the International Race of Champions Race at
Talladega SuperSpeedway earlier in the day, arrived at Knoxville
Raceway following the qualifying session and was right behind his
cousin at the finish line in the Vivarin Dash.
    Mark burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A"
Feature, and was eight car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers by
the end of the opening lap.
    Defending Knoxville Raceway champion Johnny Herrera passed First
Heat Race winner Sammy Swindell for fourth place early in the second
lap, but the 1983 Nationals champion steered his #1 ChannelLock
Gambler deep into the second corner to regain the position the next
time around.
    The field was tightened midway through the fourth lap when "B"
Feature winner Scott Whitworth stopped his #96 Cab Fresh Filters
Schnee in turn two with a blown engine.
    Mark raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the
yellow, while defending Skoal Outlaw Series champion Dave Blaney 
steered the #10 Vivarin J&J deep into the third corner. He raced 
wheel-to-wheel with Steve Kinser, but was unable to complete the 
pass for the runner-up spot. At the same time, Knoxville Raceway 
veteran Terry McCarl passed three cars to take over seventh place.
    Mark was a full straightaway ahead of the 24-car field when he
caught the backmarkers nine laps into the race.
    Swindell and Herrera put together a distant replay of their
earlier battle for fourth place during the 10th and 11th laps. The
1986 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year drove the #47 Casey's General
Stores Maxim past the two-time Skoal Outlaw Series champion, only to
have Sammy return the favor the next time around. Their battle raged
for two more laps until Herrera's engine started smoking. He dropped
out of the race during lap 17 and was credited with a 21st-place
finish.
    Six-time Knoxville Raceway champion Danny Lasoski passed nine cars
during the first half of the race before driving the #5 Jackpot
Junction Casino Schnee into fifth place with 11 laps remaining.
    Jeff Swindell, who started the race outside the 10th row, drove
the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim past 13 sprinters during the first 20 laps,
then passed Joey Saldana for sixth place during lap 21.
    Mark raced through lapped traffic with ease during the final laps,
and took the checkered flag with a full straightaway to spare. Steve's
#11 Quaker State Maxim crossed the finish line in second place, ahead
of Blaney, Sammy Swindell, Lasoski, Jeff Swindell, Saldana, Stevie
Smith, McCarl and Gaerte.
    The Knoxville event marked the return of 1995 Rookie of the Year
Randy Hannagan and Gary Stanton's #75 Mopar Maxim to the World of
Outlaws tour. With a fresh, new aluminum engine, Hannagan ran second 
in the First Heat Race and passed six cars to finish 17th in the "A"
Feature.
    The next stop for the World of Outlaws' fire-breathing, mud-
slinging sprint car racing teams is a May 2-3 event at I-80 Speedway
in Greenwood, NE. WoO
