Notable Non-winners Seek First Dover Downs Victory in Miller 500
Dover, DE - How's this for an all-star lineup of Winston Cup talent: Terry
Labonte, Mark Martin, Ernie Irvan, Sterling Marlin, Dale Jarrett, Jimmy
Spencer, and Bobby Labonte. All are top contenders on the NASCAR Winston Cup
circuit in 1996, all are multiple race winners during the past two seasons, but
none owns a Winston Cup victory at Dover Downs International Speedway.
They'll all have a chance to add that missing Monster Mile triumph to their
resume in the 28th annual Miller 500 on Sunday, June 2.
The elder Labonte brother is the only driver among Dover's top ten career money
winners without a victory, yet he ranks ahead of seven-time winners Richard
Petty and Bobby Allison in career earnings. A second behind Harry Gant during
his Winston Cup championship season of 1984 is Terry's best Dover result.
Martin holds three Dover runner-up finishes, two of them coming at the hands of
Dale Earnhardt in 1989 by a combined margin of less than two seconds. Irvan's
only second place finish at Dover came in the 1994 Miller 500, his most recent
appearance at the Monster Mile.
Dale Jarrett (1993) and Bobby Labonte (1995) each has a Miller 500 second place
to his credit, each while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing. Marlin's best Dover
results are a pair of fifths, and Spencer's best finish at the track where he
made his Winston Cup debut is a sixth in 1993.
As historian Skip Clayton points out in an article to be published in the
Miller 500 programs, these Dover non-winners are in good company. All-time
greats Buddy Baker, Bobby Issac and Donnie Allison never won at the Monster
Mile, and neither did Tim Richmond or Alan Kulwicki in their tragically
shortened careers.
Tickets are on sale for the Miller 500 on Sunday, June 2, and for the GM
