NORTON, FULLEN and HAZELBAKER AT ANDERSON
WIND DAMAGES SPEEDWAY GROUNDS

	ANDERSON (April 20)---The second race of the 1996 Anderson Speedway
season featured the Open Competition Figure-8 racers.  The track was
lucky to even be open Saturday.  Wind damaged several signs and
outbuildings in severe storms on Friday evening.  Although no one was
injured, a garage, which is located by the main ticket office was
heavily damaged.  The roof and cement block wall debris were scattered
like twigs over the parking lot.

	Charlie Coles smashed the O/C Figure-8 course record in time trials,
with a 17.050 run.  R.J. Norton, Jr. sailed into the lead and never
stopped until the race was over.  This was the first Open Comp
Figure-8 in recent times to go green to checker.  Coles ran in the top
five until lap 31.  He ran off of the new infield pavement and got
airborne.   The Right front suspension collapsed.  Norton won the race
over  Fred Bear, Jr., Mike St. John, Danny Turner and Duane Lee.

	William Mefford jumped ahead of the Hoosier Park Late Model field in
their 25 lap main.  He lost the lead to Jerry Stires on a lap 6
restart.  Stires looked to be heading for his first win.  Ray Fullen
pressured and ducked to the inside on lap 14.  Stires knew contact was
imminent and pulled high, falling to fourth.  Fullen won over Jim
Cooper, Don Bickford, Stires and Mefford.  Bret Miles won the fast
heat while Herb Rose took the other.  Comeback drivers Bobby Fields
and Vic Hellis are continuing to experience horrible luck.  Fields's
hit the wall during a heat  and was out for the night, while Hellis
pulled out of competition, during the main.

	The Street Stock "A" feature saw half of the field involved in a first
lap crash.  J. Elliot was turned around on the backstretch and several
cars hit him.  Defending points champ Chris Bair was knocked out.
Jamie Williams led all of the laps but the most important one.  The
last lap.  A lapped car decided to race him and crashed both.  Rob
Hazelbaker won over Wayne Young, Benny Blevins, Jr., Ronnie Rose and
Dennis Wallen.  Last week Young was accused by some as being
unsportsmanlike but tonight was a little different.  He leaned out of
his car to pull a rubbing fender away from Blevins' tire while they
drove under yellow!  The wild B-main saw Shawn Ellis and Rich Goodwin
go into the backstretch wall on the start.  Goodwin's mount rode into
the wall, while Ellis climbed the fence and turned over in three.
Goodwin was taken to St. John's hospital with a back injury.  Gary
Moore, who earlier had won his first ever race, took the "B" main.
Jerry Swinford, Jr. was knocked from the front by a lapped car for the
second week straight.  Moore won over Chuck Epler and Frank Boling.
Neil Huddleston, Don Cain, Moore and Harold O' Bryant won heats.
