    MEMPHIS, TN (April 13) - Looking at the statistics, Mark Kinser's
victory in Saturday's Skoal Outlaw Series "A" Feature at Memphis
Motorsports Park appears rather routine. He started on the front row
and led all 30 laps for the $6,000 victory.
    Mark admitted after the race, however, that his second consecutive
victory at Memphis' semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval was anything but
routine. He needed a little help from his friends - father and crew
chief Karl Kinser and the caution flags - after the engine in his #5M
Wirtgen Maxim developed a miss midway through the main event.
    "I really didn't think I'd be able to finish the race," Mark told
the record crowd from victory lane. "We were running on six cylinders
the last half of the race."
    A 16th-lap red period allowed his crew to change gears, which
compensated for the engine's lack of horsepower, and a pair of
cautions took him out of lapped traffic.
    Mark's first victory of the season, coupled with cousin Steve's
seventh-place finish, pushed him into first place in the World of
Outlaws point standings. Mark holds a six-point lead entering next
weekend's races at West Plains Motor Speedway and Missouri
International Race Park.
    Andy Hillenburg earned the right to start the main event on the
pole by beating Mark across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. He
drove his #2 STP J&J into the lead as the green flag fell, only to
have Mark pass him high in the second corner seconds later.
    Mark opened a 10 car-length advantage within five laps as
Hillenburg battled to keep Gary Wright, Sammy Swindell and First
Quaker State Heat Race winner Dave Blaney from passing him for the
runner-up spot. Kinser caught the backmarkers two laps later, and was
a full straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers by the eighth lap.
    Although Hillenburg closed to within 15 car-lengths during lap
nine, Mark executed some daring moves in lapped traffic to increase
his advantage within four laps.
    Kinser's engine dropped a couple of cylinders as Blaney steered
the #10 Vivarin J&J around Swindell midway through the race.
    Mark got the break he needed the next time around when Tommie
Estes, Jr., took the low line into the first corner, hooked the berm
and flipped. Terry Gray collided with the flipping Estes, knocking
both out of the race, and bringing out the red flag. Estes was taken
to a nearby hospital, but was given a clean bill of health.
    Karl and his crew quickly changed the gears in the #5M while the
red flag was flying, which helped restore the car's horsepower.
    Four lapped cars restarted the race between Kinser and Hillenburg,
allowing Mark to race away when the green flag replaced the red. Mark
increased his advantage as Wright moved in to challenge Hillenburg for
second place during the 18th lap.
    "The Buckeye Bullet" joined the battle for the runner-up spot the
next time around. He passed Wright in the second corner, only to have
Gary return the favor as they raced into turn four.
    Kinser was approaching lapped traffic with a full straightaway
advantage when a blown engine in the #71M EcoWater Systems Maxim
forced Stevie Smith to stop in turn four with eight laps remaining.
Smith, who entered the event only two points out of second place in
the point standings, dropped to fifth with Saturday's 20th-place
finish.
    A three-car cushion on the ensuing restart allowed Kinser to
quickly open a comfortable advantage. He was a full straightaway ahead
of Hillenburg when his car also lost a cylinder during the 25th lap.
    Wright was trying to elude Blaney and Swindell when he allowed his
#9 Action Rent-to-Own Schnee to clip a retaining tire deep in the
second corner with four laps remaining. Both "The Buckeye Bullet" and
Sammy raced past as Wright battled to keep the #9 under control. Steve
Kinser also hit the tire, while the #83 Beef Packers Stealth driven by
Joey Saldana suffered a flat tire in the melee.
    Mark raced away from the field when the race resumed, and was 10
car-lengths ahead of Hillenburg when he took the checkered flag.
Rounding out the top 10 in the "A" Feature were Blaney, the Swindell
brothers - Sammy and Jeff - Wright, Steve Kinser, Bobby Davis, Jr.,
Danny Lasoski and Lance Blevins.
    "The Dude" struggled early, qualifying only 22nd-quick and
finishing seventh in the First Quaker State Heat Race. But he came
back to win the "B" Feature, then passed 12 cars to finish ninth in
the main event. WoO
