If any track can claim to be the spirtual home of Formula 1, it must be Monza. The Autodromo Natzionale is located 10 miles north west of Milan in a park and always has a massive crowd populated by thousands of loyal Ferrari fans.
The circuit itself is a combination of an old banked oval circuit and a road course. It is the fastest circuit in Formula1 with drivers lapping in an average of over 145mph.
Monza is responsible for the fastest race and the closest finish, both in the 1971 race. Peter Gethin beat Ronnie Peterson by 1/100th of a second. More remarkable still is that Francois Cevert was third just 8/100ths behind Peterson and Mike Hailwood and Howden Ganley finished fourth and fifth right behind the first three. 0.61 seconds seperated first and fifth.
