Hockenheim is mainly known for the death of Jim Clark, in an as yet unexplained accident. The track is two long straights in and out of the forest, separated at one end by the famous Ostkurve and at the other by the twisty grand stand packed Autodrom section.
Two chicanes were added on the long straights, one named after Jim Clark, the other now named after Ayrton Senna.
After Patrick Depailler was killed in a testing accident at the Ostkurve, a further chicane was added.
Hockenheim has hosted the German GP since 1977 except for 1985 when it returned briefly to the Nurburgring.
