Man of the match.....Villeneuve

Jacques Villeneuve reduced Damon Hill's championship lead to 15 points with a faultless drive at the British GP.
Jacques got away brilliantly and led into the first corner, Hill had a terrible start and dropped back to fifth behind Alesi, Hakkinen and Schumacher.
Within two laps Schumacher pulled out of the race with his Ferrari stuck in sixth gear, this was compounded by his team mate Eddie Irvine stopping two laps later with smoke pouring from the back of his Ferrari.
By lap seven Villeneuve was pulling out an impressive lead, Alesi, Hakkinen and Hill were all running close to each other. Barrichello was fifth and Gerhard Berger completed the points places.
By lap 10 Villeneuve had stretched his lead to 10.7 seconds and was pulling out almost a second a lap. Hill was being held up by the McLaren of Hakkinen but he was finding it difficult to get close enough to attempt to overtake.
Ukyo Katayama drove into the pits and stayed there on lap twelve and one lap later Rosset parked his Arrows at the side of the circuit and retired.
Villeneuve continued to stretch his lead, but back markers meant that it was not increasing at a second a lap any more, he put in the fastest lap of the race on lap 21 with a 1.29.288 before he came into the pits for the first of his scheduled stops. He rejoined right behind Hill who was now beginning to search out ways of passing Hakkinen.
On lap 27 Hill spun off the circuit when a faulty wheel bearing caused his front left to lock up as he entered a corner.
After Alesi had made his stop and Hakkinen had made the first of his two stops the race order settled down and Villeneuve led from Hakkinen. Alesi and Berger were next in the two Benetton cars followed by Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard. The other Jordan was seventh with Herbert, Salo, Frentzen Verstappen and Diniz completing the top twelve runners.
Pedro Diniz went out with engine failure on lap 38 followed by the other Ligier on lap 40. Jean Alesi also joined the casualty list on lap 44 when he too suffered a wheel bearing failure, right rear this time.
Alesi's retirement along with Hakkinen and Herbert's second scheduled pit stops meant that the running order on lap 46 was Villeneuve, Berger, Hakkinen, Barrichello, Coulthard, Brundle, Salo, Frentzen, Herbert, Verstappen and Fisichella.
Herbert did press Frentzen for a short time but the order remained the same to the flag. Villeneuve drove a perfect race, so perfect that he was hardly ever mentioned in the race commentary. Another good result for McLaren, showing that they are on the right road and a great performance from the Jordan team, on home ground they have recorded a great result.
