Using the Netscape Navigator* 2.0 browser with your America Online* account.
Step-by-step instructions are provided by AOL. Here is an overview of what you need to do
while connected to America Online:
- In AOL, go to keyword: Netscape
- Click on Winsock Central, read the FAQ, and download AOL’s winsock.dll.
- Click on Netscape Download, read the instructions for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, and download
Netscape Navigator 2.0 (N16E20.EXE, approx. 2.5M byte file).
Note: for downloading files (such as Netscape), it is recommended that
you create a c:\temp directory, download and install all applications in this directory.
This ensures that during installation, existing files in your computer do not get overwritten
by the new application which may have some of the same files.
- Disconnect from AOL and install the software.
Installing the software:
AOL's Winsock.dll.
- Read the Winsock FAQ (AOL keyword: netscape; area: Winsock Central) for complete details about downloading winsock.
- Before you copy AOL’s winsock interface driver to your c:\windows\system directory; make sure you do not
already have a winsock file for other third party Internet applications. If you do, here are some options:
- save winsock files to floppy diskettes; or
- rename winsock.dll to i.e.: winsock.sav; or
- create a subdirectory and file folders for your various winsock files. For example:
- * create a subdirectory called socks (c:\windows\system\socks). In that directory create folders for each winsock
file
- * c:\windows\systems\socks\aol (for AOL’s winsock) and
- * c:\windows\systems\socks\ms (for Microsoft*’s winsock)etc.
- * When you need to use a specific winsock file, go to that file folder and copy the file.
- * Then go to c:\windows\systems directory and paste (copy) that file into that directory.
- * Reboot, restart Windows and proceed.
- Copy AOL's winsock.dll (approx. 11K bytes file) to c:\windows\system.
Installing Netscape Navigator 2.0:
- To install Netscape Navigator 2.0, follow the download instructions provided in AOL's keyword: netscape.
- Go to the directory where you saved the netscape download and click on the file "n16e20.exe" to extract it.
- Once you have extracted this file, you then click on the "setup.exe" file. Setup will indicate when you have finished.
- Reboot, restart Windows.
- Check that AOL’s winsock (@11K bytes file) is installed in:
c:\windows\system\winsock.dll.
