Intel Foundation Announces A New $100,000 Grant “Computer Education For Parents”

“The success of computer education programs for children often depends on the extent to which their parents can understand and support the learning,” according to Peter Broffman, director of the Intel Foundation. “Unfortunately, many low-income adults do not have ready access to technology. This grant will serve two ends: to help low-income parents learn how to use computers and to help them reinforce the computer education their children are receiving.”

Program Summary

The Intel Foundation will provide a cash grant of $100,000 for a two-year program to provide computer education to low-income adults. The program must:

• Involve the parents of K-12 school children currently involved in computer education at the same institution/organization, or at a partner institution.
• Include a plan for intergenerational (parents and K-12 children) learning, with a preference for families learning together.
• Have as its objective the teaching of computers and the Internet. Programs which use computers merely as a tool to teach other subject matter are not eligible for this grant.

Proposals for this one-time grant opportunity must be received by the Intel Foundation by 5:00 PM on October 15, 1996. Proposals should be mailed to: Intel Foundation, AG1-102, 5200 N.E. Elam Young Parkway, Hillsboro OR 97124. One grant in the amount of $100,000 will be awarded. The Foundation reserves the right to make no award if, in its sole judgment, no appropriate or qualifying proposals have been submitted. The grant winning organization may use additional funds, obtained from other funding sources, to operate the program. The grant monies must be used for non-capital program costs, not for equipment.

Eligibility

This grant is available to any accredited academic institution or 501(c)(3) organization located and delivering services in one of the following areas:

• Arizona: Maricopa, Pima or Pinal counties
• California: El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento or Santa Clara counties
• New Mexico: Bernalillo, Cibola or Sandoval counties
• Oregon: Multnomah or Washington counties
• Washington: Kitsap, Pierce or Thurston counties
