Overview

Multimedia and communications are driving today’s and tomorrow’s most exciting and compute intensive applications. MMX^TM technology is a new extension to the Intel Architecture which will:

• Enhance the performance of these applications, and
  
• Enable altogether new features/capabilities.

MMX technology will first appear in a new Pentium(r) processor targeted for introduction in Q1/97 (codenamed the P55C)

The public release of MMX technology details on March 5, 1996 allows software tool, library and application developers to begin developing products that will utilize this new technology. Through this effort, when PCs with MMX technology begin to appear in the market in late 1996 and more widely in 1997, exciting consumer appealing multimedia, games and Internet applications will be readily available.
