The Intel Museum

Some people have a natural comfort with computers, while others approach them with feelings bordering on terror. Whichever category you fall into, you may find that a trip to the Intel Museum is not only fun, but that it will increase your knowledge of technology topics.

Located at Intel Corporation's headquarters in Santa Clara, California, the museum describes how computer chips are made and used. You can learn the differences among microprocessors, memory and embedded control chips. You can also see how chips are constructed, layer upon layer, atop wafers of silicon, the primary component of ordinary beach sand.

You can test what types of materials conduct electricity, explore video technology on computers and measure time in billionths of a second. Video cameras mounted inside the Intel factory next door allow museum visitors to watch the actual fabrication of chips as it happens. Museum photo

The Intel Museum is designed for children of elementary school age through adults. Visitors may drop in for self-guided experiences or guided tours for groups may be arranged by calling in advance. Education programs are available for teachers who bring students to the museum.
