OverDrive® Processor Product Overview

The Intel OverDrive® processors are end-user processor upgrades designed for upgradable Intel486(TM) and Pentium® processor-based systems. OverDrive processors provide an increase in the overall performance of today's sophisticated and complex software applications.

Pentium® OverDrive® Processors for Pentium Processors

Pentium OverDrive Processors are now available for upgradable Pentium processor-based PC's. They are the ultimate PC upgrade because they accelerate all PC applications, are affordable, and offer easy single chip installation. Pentium OverDrive processors help users improve the performance of all software applications as well as increase their ability to harness the resources of the Internet. The product line includes: *Pentium OverDrive processors for 90-MHz and 100-MHz systems will be available in May 1996.

Like the Pentium processor, the Pentium OverDrive processors feature:

The Pentium OverDrive processor also includes added silicon and package features to ensure worry-free processor upgradability and compatibility to existing systems: Pentium OverDrive processors are not designed to upgrade systems with two processors. The system will not operate properly with two Pentium OverDrive processors installed.

OverDrive Processors for Intel486(TM) Processors

Pentium OverDrive processor:
Most Intel486 processor-based systems can be upgraded to Pentium processor technology with the Pentium OverDrive processor. This upgrade features Pentium processor superscalar architecture, a 32Kbyte enhanced on-chip cache memory and a fast math coprocessor unit. It supports 64 bit internal data transfers to cache while working seamlessly with the 32-bit Intel486 bus architecture. The Pentium OverDrive processor is the recommended upgrade option for upgradable IntelSX2(TM), IntelDX2(TM), Intel486 SX, and Intel486 DX processor systems with a 237 or 238 pin socket CPU-based systems. Two versions of the Pentium OverDrive processors are available: the 63-MHz Pentium OverDrive processors for 25/50-MHz systems and the 83-MHz Pentium OverDrive processors for 33/66-MHz systems.

IntelDX4(TM) OverDrive processors:
For those unable to upgrade with the Pentium OverDrive processor, the IntelDX4(TM) OverDrive processor is the recommended option for upgradable Intel486 processor-based PC's. It features Intel's speed tripling technology, along with an on-chip math coprocessor and enhanced 16Kbyte cache. Two versions of the IntelDX4 OverDrive processor are available for Intel486 SX and DX processor-based systems: the 75-MHz IntelDX4 OverDrive processors for 20/25-MHz systems and the 100-MHz IntelDX4 OverDrive processors for 33-MHz systems.

Future OverDrive Processors

Intel plans to offer future higher speed OverDrive processors for today's Pentium processor and Pentium Pro processor-based systems. Refer to the socket specifications for system design information.

For Pentium Processor-based system designs:

*These OverDrive processors can also be used to upgrade new 150 and 166-MHz upgradable Pentium processor systems for users desiring additional performance. For 150-MHz and 166-MHz systems, these upgrades will boost performance of integer applications up to 30%.

For Pentium Pro Processor-based system designs:

There are no plans to offer an OverDrive processor based on Pentium Pro processor technology for the Pentium processor-based systems.

Socket Specifications

An OverDrive processor socket specification is developed in conjunction with the original processor definition. The socket specifications are included in the processor datasheets as a chapter on upgradability. The OverDrive processors are designed to meet the socket specifications.

For new Pentium processor designs, the OEM should design in Socket 7 for the maximum flexibility in upgrades. Socket 7 will permit the end user to upgrade to the highest performance Pentium OverDrive processor. Refer to the Pentium Processor 75/90/120/133 MHz datasheet, for the OverDrive Processor Socket Specification.

For Pentium Pro processors-based system designs, the OEM should design to the Socket 8 specifications. Refer to the Pentium Pro Processor at 150 MHz datasheet, Chapter 8 for the OverDrive Processor Socket Specification.

Performance

Intel OverDrive processors increase the speed and performance of all software applications. The iCOMP® Index shows how much processing power is gained by adding an OverDrive processor. To see the performance gained by adding an OverDrive processor running commonly used Business and Home software check out the performance report.
