The Intel Pentium® processor is bringing a new level of high-performance to embedded PC applications. What's more, a wide variety of platform solutions and development tools are available now to accelerate your time-to-market.

Pentium® Processors, Intel486(TM), Intel386(TM) and 186 Processors Overview

The Intel architecture embedded 16- and 32-bit processors offer a price performance range which make them well suited for the embedded market segment. In fact, the core architecture for these processors is the same as that developed for the PC industry and provide software compatibility and a huge support infrastructure. Tools suites, development platforms, compilers, debuggers, emulators, textbooks and training seminars from Intel and third-party suppliers reduce time-to-market.

The Intel architecture now powers a broad spectrum of communication information systems. These systems include digital cellular telephones, hand-held communicators and terminals, personal digital assistants, wired and wireless network interface cards, fax machines, modems and office automation peripherals.

You'll also find Intel architecture in many traditional, real-time applications, such as medical equipment, robotics, factory automation, measurement control systems, sensors and test equipment.

PentiumŪ Processor Product Overview

The PentiumŪ processor family is a superior solution for high performance embedded applications. The embedded family includes the 100, 133+VRT and 166 MHz Pentium processors. Voltage Reduction Technology (VRT) is included in the 133 MHz version resulting in lower power consumption. In addition, each member of the embedded family includes the performance enhancements of Pentium processor technology, providing superior investment protection to handle tomorrow's demands.

PC Compatibility

While incorporating new features and improvements made possible by advances in semiconductor technology, the Pentium processor is fully software compatible with previous members of the Intel microprocessor family. In particular, its history in desktop computing has resulted in a legacy of development and application software transferable to embedded applications. In conjunction with existing PC hardware and off-the-shelf development packages, Pentium processor technology has become the ultimate embedded PC solution.

A Complete Solution

Intel provides technical and sales support for customers designing with the Pentium processor in high performance embedded applications. This support includes the availability of two Pentium processor compatible PCIsets: Intel 82430MX and the Intel 430HX.

The Intel 82430MX provides a high performance, lower power PCIset solution. Traditionally used in mobile applications, the 82430MX PCIset is ideally suited for applications that require a faster bus (from 25- to 33-MHz) for greater performance.

The Intel 430HX PCIset is the next generation of the Intel 430 PCIset family. Its two-chip solution includes improved performance with better EDO memory timings, better CPU to PCI performance, support USB, additional buffering and arbitration and writeback enhancements and error correcting codes (ECC).

The 430HX PCIset will enable the first USB platformsand Intel expects to support USB top to bottom in PCIsets.

Intel486(TM) Processors

The Intel486 microprocessors have provided 32-bit high performance in increasingly complex application environments for personal computers and network servers. Now the same microprocessors are available for a range of embedded applications, such as terminals, embedded PC boards, industrial control systems, scanners, printers, medical equipment and entertainment systems. Current customers of the embedded Intel386 processor can now take advantage of the Intel486 architecture to extend the performance of their embedded designs.

The Intel SL Technology, features in the Intel486 processors, allow system designers to build intelligent power management capabilities into hardware, making these capabilities independent of application software. Power management becomes an integral part of the system, regardless of what operating system or application is used. Power management is improved because SL Technology protects the power management features from conflicting with other software.

Ultra Low Power Intel486(TM) SX and Intel486 GX Embedded ProcessorsFamily

The Ultra Low Power Intel486 SX embedded processor is the first member of a family of Intel486 processors to be developed specifically for the embedded market. It brings high levels of performance to low-cost, entry-level, embedded applications, where maximum energy efficiency is a high concern. These low-power technology improvements allow for new packaging options for the Intel486 processor. The Ultra Low Power Intel486 SX processor comes in the 176 lead Thin Quad Flat Pack(TQFP) package. This is the smallest, lowest profile Intel486 processor in the world. At 25.4mm x 25.4mm x 1.5mm, the 176 lead TQFP package is the same size and thickness as the United States quarter (25 cent coin)! The Ultra Low Power Intel486 GX is also available as an Intel SmartDie(TM) product, which is ideal for the most compact designs.

IntelDX2(TM) and IntelDX4(TM) Processor Family

The IntelDX2 and IntelDX4 processors bring the highest level of performance in the Intel486(TM) family, created by such combined features as speed-multiplying technology, on-chip integration of Level I unified code and data cache, memory management unit with paging, and floating-point unit. The clock-multiplier allows the processor to operate at frequencies higher than the external memory bus. The integer unit uses RISC design techniques to provide single-clock-cycle execution of common instructions and general purpose registers for manipulating 32-bit addresses and data. The 8K on-chip Write-Through unified cache on the speed-doubled IntelDX2 processor, and the 16K on-chip Write-Back Enhanced unified cache on the speed-tripled IntelDX4 processor maintains the one-clock-per-instruction execution rate. Intel 486 processors provide support for multiprocessing systems. Support for multi-level caches reduces bus utilization, allowing multiple Intel486 processors to share a single memory bus. For the highest level of performance, choose the IntelDX2 and IntelDX4 processors.

Intel386(TM) Processors

For 10 years, Intel386 processors have provided the computer industry with reliability and high performance. Initially built as the host CPU for PCs, these processors are still readily available and continue to provide high-performance, 32-bit processing power for embedded applications. Thanks to a static Intel386 processor core design, the new pin-for-pin compatible family enables higher performance and lower power and voltage capabilities or embedded systems than was previously available.

Intel386(TM) Integrated Processor Family

The Intel386 EX processor is the first in a planned family of integrated processors for embedded applications. Intel based the EX on the same static Intel386 processor 32-bit core, and incorporated PC-compatiible and traditional embedded peripherals to provide a high-performance, integrated embedded solution.

186 Processors

186 Standard Processor Family

For the 186 standard processor family, the numbers tell the story: more than 10,000 design wins and 150 million units have shipped in its 12 years of production. With the 186 family of products, you can determine the cost and performance requirements for your embedded design and then choose from a wide variety of options: CHMOS, HMOS, and 8- and 16-bit external bus versions.

The 80C186/188XL family is pin-for-pin compatible with the 80186/188 family and ads an enhanced feature set. The high-performance CHMOS process allows the 80C186/188XL to run twice the clock rate of the HMOS 80186/188 while consuming less than one-fourth the power.

186 Enhanced Processor Family

In 1990, Intel designed these processors to meet performance, integration and power consumption needs. Intel created a modular core architecture in order to easily proliferate the family. The 80C186Ex family features an improved 1-micron static core design, and all of the enhanced products run at 25mhz. In addition, the Ex family products incorporate new features (serial channels, DRAM refresh control and power management) to provide more functionality. The Ex core has also been enhanced to run at 3 volts.

Development Tool Support

Because 186 and Intel386 processors are members of the Intel architecture family, the leading architecture used in PCs, a broad range of familiar, low-cost development tools are readily available.

ApBUILDER, Intel's interactive programming software, is a powerful tool that generates peripheral initialization code in ASM and C for Intel's embedded devices with a click of the mouse. This free software tool, along with Hypertext User's Manuals, speeds the learning curve and can reduce total design time.

Growth and competition in the PC industry have produced tools that are time-proven and run on the PC, which eliminates the need for expensive workstation-based development tools For example, the Microsoft* and Borland * development tools, used to create more than 50,000 PC applications, can now be used in an embedded environment.
