Flash Memory Components Overview

Innovative Technology for Cost-Effective Solutions
Intel's Flash memory family features an extensive product line, giving customers the flexibility to select the best products for their application, from High Integration Boot Block, to High Performance Fast Flash, to High Density FlashFile(TM) memory components.

High Integration Boot Block

Intel's advanced SmartVoltage Boot Block components offer a single-chip, optimized-block size, highly integrated, and high performance solution for updatable firmware storage. These components come in 2-, 4- and 8-Mbit densities and provide an easy pin out compatible upgrade path. These SmartVoltage flash memory devices offer easy upgrades to previous Intel Boot Block offerings in addition to offering low power 3.3V or 5V read, and 5V or fast 12V write. Additionally, these devices offer 2.7Vcc extended temperature, making them the optimum solution for the wireless communications market. These products offer x8 and x8/x16 operation for CPU flexibility, and a hardware-lockable block to ensure security for critical code storage. A high performance 60ns read access speed is also available.

High Performance Fast Flash

To meet high performance requirements, many embedded systems store code in nonvolatile memory (NVM) such as ROM, EPROM or flash and shadow this code to DRAM for execution. Fast Flash memories, with their optimized system-read interfaces, have the performance, nonvolatility and updating capacity to replace redundant DRAM + NVM for code storage/execution and reduced system cost. The synchronous, effective 0-wait-state, burst-read interface of the 28F016XS makes it ideal for residing on the local bus of burst-mode processors, such as the i960® and the Intel486(TM) processors. The DRAM system read interface of the 28F016XD is optimized for designs such as embedded PC motherboards and anywhere a DRAM bus architecture is used.

All Fast Flash devices feature SmartVoltage technology, providing the fastest-available, 5V-only write performance and even higher performance 12V device writes. SmartVoltage technology also supports 3.3V reads, as well as high performance 5V reads.

Because these devices feature the architecture of Intel's FlashFile(TM) memories, they are ideal for solid-state mass storage applications such as resident flash disks (RFDs). Valuable mass storage features include an integrated flash controller that supports SRAM-speed burst write performance and advanced command-set queuing to off load system resources during flash erase/write cycles.

High Density FlashFile(TM) Memory

Intel's symmetrically-blocked FlashFile(TM) memory family provides the widest range of high density, mass storage flash devices available today. Intel's strong technology track record, excellent quality and volume manufacturing experience establishes the company as the leader in high density flash memory.

The FlashFile memory architecture is partitioned into independently erasable 64 Kbyte blocks, making it optimal for partial code updates or file storage applications. These blocks are independently lockable on all family members except the first generation 8-Mbit 28F008SA. This feature enables protection of important firmware such as operating systems and application programs from being inadvertently erased.

The command set for the 8-Mbit 28F008SA is supported by all of the family members, which allows design migration up and down the device density range without system software changes. The newest members of the FlashFile memory family, the 28F004SC, 28F008SC and 28F016SC, expand the byte-wide FlashFile memory family to provide density upgrades with pinout and package compatibility for 4 Mbit, 8 Mbit and 16 Mbit densities. The new byte-wide FlashFile memory family features enhanced SmartVoltage technology with 5V and 3.3V single-supply capability as well as fast factory programming with 12V. As part of this family of products, the 28F004SC-L, 28F008SC-L and 28F016SC-L also offer low power 2.7V read capability.

The 28F016SA, 28F016SV and 28F032SA devices also have an integrated flash controller that supports 14.3-Mbyte/sec. burst write performance, and advanced command-set queuing to off-load system resources during flash erase/write cycles. The 28F016SV also features SmartVoltage technology which supports high performance and low power. Specifically, 5V reads, low power 3.3V reads, as well as 5V writes and fast factory 12V writes. These 16- and 32-Mbit devices are also configurable as x8 or x16, which is ideal for 16- and 32-bit bus applications.

First Generation Bulk Erase

The bulk array flash components (1-Mbit, 2-Mbit) were designed for EPROM-type replacement applications. These devices offer 12V write, 5V read, and non-automated program/erase algorithms.

Development Tool Support

Intel is committed to providing, in conjunction with its vendor partners, a full range of tools and software necessary to make our flash memory products the easiest to use in the industry.

Intel and its partners provide a range of design tools, including fully-tested reference designs, logic models, IBIS models, schematic symbols and Timing Designer* files. These tools ensure you fastest-possible system time-to-market by enabling you to design and simulate with flash memory ahead of product sampling.

Intel tools consist of a variety of reference software utilities and file systems to assist you with your flash designs. The FLASHBuilder family of Windows*-based utilities helps you choose the optimum flash component or software solution for your unique application. Evaluation kits provide a complete hardware and software solution for evaluating and developing with Intel flash products.

With Intel's Programmer Evaluation Lab, you are assured of reliable programming support when you need it. Intel also provides technical expertise in alternative programming solutions such as ATE and JTAG. Intel's packaging expertise ensures support in areas including automation and prototyping/production sockets as well as manual handling processes. Finally, Intel works closely with many PCMCIA adapter manufacturers to ensure support for flash memory cards.
