Flash Memory Cards Overview

Intel's Flash memory cards bring the code and data file storage advantages of Intel's FlashFile(TM) memory to embedded systems and portable electronics systems. These products provide the low cost, extended system battery life, high performance, ruggedness and reliability that are required for today's embedded systems applications.

Series 100 Miniature Cards

The Series 100 Miniature Card is Intel's new Flash memory card form factor. Available initially in 2- and 4-Mbyte densities, the Series 100 is a low cost flash memory card designed with portable consumer electronics systems in mind. Digital photography, audio recording, wireless communications, and handheld computing are ideal applications for Miniature Cards, which are favored for their low cost and compactness. The Intel Series 100 card is based on the Miniature Card Specification, available through the Miniature Card Implementers Forum, which defines a low-cost elastomeric interconnect between the system and card. The Series 100 Miniature Cards are based on a x16 linear array of Intel 28F008SC FlashFile(TM) memory devices that support 3.3V and 5V read/write operation and automated suspend options. When used in conjunction with host-based filing system software, such Flash Translation Layer (FTL), the Series 100 cards offer the system user file format compatibility across a wide range of systems.

Value Series 100 PC Cards

Intel's newest Flash Memory PC card, the Value Series 100, available in 2-, 4-, 8-Mbyte densities, offers a low cost, removable, solid-state storage solution for code and data, as well as for high performance disk emulation. It is ideally suited to industrial oriented applications, such as network routing, switching, and mobile computing. Combined with file management software, such as FTL, it provides high performance disk emulation for rugged environments and applications. These Flash Memory PC cards enhance applications through their symmetrically blocked architecture, extended Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and 5V operation. They can be used as a simple x16 linear array of flash devices. The PC Card form factor offers an industry-standard pin out, removable linear flash memory and the ability to upgrade system memory and software without changing board layout. The functionality of the Value Series 100 Flash Memory PC cards is based on Intel's 8-Mbit FlashFile memories.

Series 2 PC Cards

Intel's second generation Flash Memory PC cards feature block erasure, which offers data file and application storage in removable nonvolatile memory. Intel's Series 2 Flash Memory PC cards are available in 2-, 4-, 10- and 20-Mbyte densities. They are ideally suited to industrial oriented applications, such as network routing, switching, and mobile computing. Combined with file management software, such as FTL, it provides high performance disk emulation for rugged environments and applications. The functionality of the Series 2 Flash Memory PC cards is based on Intel's 8-Mbit FlashFile memories. Each memory card consists of a PCMCIA connector, an array of 28F008SA flash memories in TSOP packaging and card-control logic. The control logic provides the system interface and controls the internal flash memories. Intel Flash memory cards feature fast random access, byte-wide and word-wide operation, low power modes and a Card Information Structure (CIS) for easy identification of card characteristics.

Series 2+ PC Cards

Intel's Series 2+ Flash Memory PC cards are a full featured line of memory cards, including 3.3, 5, and 12V operation, block lockability, and page buffers for high speed write performance. These cards, available in densities of 4, 8, 20 and 40 Mbytes, are an excellent solution for embedded systems. The lightweight Flash memory PC cards extend system battery life and withstand environments that are too harsh for small form factor rotating disks. The functionality of the Series 2+ Flash Memory PC cards is based on Intel's 16- and 32-Mbit FlashFile memories. Each memory card consists of a PCMCIA connector, an array of 28F016SA (4-20 MB) and 28F032SA (40 MB) flash memories in TSOP packaging and card-control logic. The control logic provides the system interface and controls the internal flash memories.

Development Tools

Intel, in conjunction with its vendor partners, is committed to providing a full range of tools and software necessary to make our flash memory products the easiest to use in the industry.

Intel and its partners provide a range of design tools, including fully-tested reference designs, logic models, IBIS models, schematic symbols and Timing Designer* files. These tools ensure fast system time-to-market by enabling you to design and simulate with flash memory ahead of product sampling.

Intel tools consist of a variety of reference software utilities and file systems to assist you with your flash designs. The FLASHBuilder family of Windows*-based utilities helps you choose the optimum flash component or software solution for your unique application. Evaluation kits provide a complete hardware and software solution for evaluating and developing with Intel Flash products.

With Intel's Programmer Evaluation Lab, you are assured of reliable programming support when you need it. Intel also provides technical expertise in alternative programming solutions such as ATE and JTAG. Intel's packaging expertise ensures support in areas including automation and prototyping/production sockets as well as manual handling processes. Finally, Intel works closely with many PCMCIA adapter manufacturers to provide support for flash memory cards.
