Jaguar XJ6

For 1996, the line-up of elegant British-made sedans includes: Jaguar XJ6 and Vanden Plas, both featuring the new AJ16 4.0-liter, 24-valve in-line six cylinder; an all-new, limited availability 322hp sporting Jaguar XJR powered by a supercharged version of the AJ16 engine; and the flagship Jaguar XJ12, with a revised and more powerful version of the company's 6.0-liter 12 cylinder engine.

With over 2,000 new or re-tooled components, the 1996 XJ Series Sedans are quicker, quieter, safer and smarter than any cars in Jaguar's history. Here is a sampling of the legion of features available on XJ6, Vanden Plas, XJR and XJ12:

Mechanical Changes

AJ16 and AJ16 Supercharged 4.0-liter six-cylinder engines provide more power, torque, refinement, diagnostic capabilities and reduced emissions for the XJ6, Vanden Plas and XJR.
6.0-liter 12 cylinder engine provides more power, torque, refinement, diagnostic capabilities and reduced emissions for the XJ12.
All-Speed Full Traction Control system employing throttle control and brake intervention on the rear wheels (standard on XJ12 and XJR, and, in Canada, Vanden Plas -- part of optional Winter Package on U.S. XJ6 and Vanden Plas models);
Speed sensitive rack and pinion power steering which is sports-tuned for XJR;
Revised anti-lock brakes with ventilated rear brakes and larger calipers.

Interior Changes

One-touch open & close power tilt/slide sunroof;
Dual electronically triggered airbag supplemental restraint systems for driver and passenger;
12-way electric front seats with redesigned and repositioned controls, three-position memory and improved seat and headrest design providing increased head room (front and rear), leg room (front) and foot room (rear);
Elegant and unique leather- and wood-rimmed steering wheels (all models except XJ6) with repositioned center pad horn;
Wooden gearshift knob (on XJR and XJ12);
Premium Harman-Kardon nine-speaker sound system and 240-Watt power amplifier with six-disc CD autochanger (all models except XJ6 and, in the United States, optional on Vanden Plas which receive the 80-watt, eight-speaker audio system);
Revised controls and switchgear;
Power telescopic and tilt adjustment steering column with memory;
Improved security system with two-button "his & hers" remote transmitters;

Redesigned headlamps, radiator grille, hood, front and rear fenders, hood, taillamps and trunklid.
All-new and redesigned air conditioning and heating with improved air flow and distribution with digital control panel including outside temperature indicator; o Overhead console (all models) with an automatic, integral garage door opener (except XJ6) that learns from any home unit and can open up to four doors plus an elegant sunglass compartment with burl veneer design on Vanden Plas and XJ12;

Exterior Changes

All body panels are new or revised;
Diamond turned and chrome cast alloy wheels;
Redesigned trunk layout with hidden spare tire and battery;
Body-colored bumpers with side marker lamps;

And, as a symbolic return to Jaguar's glorious past, the famous leaping cat returns as a hood ornament, fitted to all sedan models as a factory option.

New AJ16 Engine Capable of 245 BHP

The new in-line AJ16 4.0-liter six-cylinder powerplant with its 24-valve, double overhead camshaft design offers improved performance, economy and refinement over its AJ6 predecessor with over 100 modified engine and secondary components. When mated to the ZF electronic four-speed automatic transmission, the new AJ16 propels the 1996 XJ6 and Vanden Plas from 0-60 mph in 8.0 seconds and 0-100 km/h in approximately 8.5 seconds. These models develop 245 bhp at 4,700 rpm (a 10 per cent improvement over 1994 models) and 289 lb. ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm.

More Power V-12 for 1996

The XJ12 6.0-liter, 12-cylinder engine with its aluminum alloy cylinder head and block features a new engine management system to regulate fuel and ignition functions. As a result of numerous mechanical changes made to accommodate the system's data requirements, XJ12 performance is improved for 1996. Now capable of 313 horsepower at 5350 rpm and 352 lb. ft. of torque at 3750 rpm, the XJ12 propels from 0-60 mph in 7.0 seconds and 0-100 km/h in an estimated 7.5 seconds.

First Supercharged Jaguar Ever

The all-new XJR luxury sports sedan offers true sportscar exhilaration along with legendary Jaguar refinement. With its Roots-type Eaton M90 supercharger mated to a Behr intercooler, the first non normally aspirated engine in Jaguar's 72-year history, develops 322 brake horsepower at 5,000 rpm and an exceptional 378 lbs. ft. of torque at 3,050 rpm. With its electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission and Pirelli P Zero 255/45 ZR17 rated performance tires, estimates show the XJR accelerating from 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds and 0-100 km/h in an estimated 7.2 seconds.

New Era For Jaguar Cars

More than 1,000 Jaguar dealers from around the world gathered in Paris from August 24- 27, 1994 for the company's first World Dealer Meeting, hosted by Jaguar Chairman and Chief Executive Nick Scheele. It was at the classic Louvre Museum that the new XJ Series was revealed for the first time in ceremonies that echo the world debut of the first sedan to carry the name Jaguar, the SS Jaguar, at London's Mayfair Hotel in September, 1935, nearly sixty years ago.

The XJ Series is sold in 50 markets worldwide.
