Ferrari 512 TR Engine

In the 512 TR, Ferrari utilizes the 12 cylinder boxer configuration developed for Formula 1 racing. This is clearly evident from the shape of the torque curve. Starting from a level of 400 Nm at 3,000 RPM, it rises progressively to over 488 Nm (360 Ibs./feet) at 5,500 RPM and then descends slowly to 425 Nm allowing a maximum
rev limit of 7,250 RPM. The power curve (with a maximum of 421 hp SAE at 6,750 RPM) reaches a plateau between 6,250 and 7,400 RPM allowing for sporting use of the engine.
METHODOLOGY OF THE TECHNICAL INITIATIVE
Advanced technologies and materials were used based on the following fundamental elements:
Improved Fluid Dynamics
Computer simulation (and real-world testing) was used to improve the design of the air ducts, intake manifolds, cylinder heads, camshafts, valves and exhaust manifolds.
Improved Combustion Efficiency
Increased thermodynamic efficiency, a 10 to 1 compression ratio, and better coolant circulation.
Improved Engine Management
By adopting an integrated fuel injection-ignition system the engine gains smoothness, elasticity, and readiness in engine response.
Improved Mechanical Structure
Allows for a continuous operation of the engine at 7,250 RPM and 7,400 RPM redline.
Improved Global Quality of the Product
Components, machining, and assembly have all been upgraded.
Conformity with Current Pollution Standards
EEC, USA, and Swiss.
Engine
To realize the objectives, many engine components have been improved or redesigned. The following technical improvements were made:
- New cylinder liners manufactured in aluminum with Nikasil coating.
- New pistons. Larger intake valves. Increased compression ratio (10:1).
- Modified cylinder head gaskets (to withstand higher compression ratio) and altered cylinder head coolant circulation layout.
- Reinforced camshafts with a new profile.
- Valve tappets with a redesigned bucket and springs.
- New larger diameter intake valves.
- Separate air boxes with filters with dynamic air intake.
- Longer and straighter air intake manifolds.
- Integrated electronic fuel injection system and ignition (Bosch Motronic 2.7) with self-diagnosis capabilities and ECU located in the cockpit
- Double independent submergible fuel pumps
- Exhaust manifolds with a new layout
- Metallic type pre-catalysts
- Exhaust muffler with resonators and new heat shields
- Aluminum oil radiators with U-circulation in series and new aluminum tubing
- Coolant expansion tank located between intake manifolds
- More powerful alternator
- Secondary electric air pump with new air distribution pattern
Gearbox
Because of added engine power, modifications were made in the technical characteristics of the transmission resulting in improved performance:
- Limited slip differential (40 percent) with reduced axial thrust to increase reliability
- New transfer gear ratio
- New synchronizer pre-loading springs
- Gear shift lever housing with sliding ball bearings, new selector and modified gear shift lever inclination
- New single-plate clutch with reduced inertia and asbestos-free clutch linings
Braking System
The system has been enhanced with a 15% increase in braking surface to further reduce the braking distance:
- Larger cross drilled front disc brakes: front 315 x 32 mm; rear 310 x 28 mm
- Aluminum calipers with larger pistons: front 44/40 mm; rear 40/36 mm
- New ducts for brake cooling
- New brake proportioning valve
- More direct brake pedal ratio
- Redesigned handbrake with reduced application effort
- Bosch ABS system (since model year 1994)
