The 318 Models: Exciting Entry Level To BMW Ownership
This trio parallels the three 325 models with a 318i Sedan, a 318is Coupe and a 318i Convertible. All are powered by a smooth, highly fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engine which, thanks in part to its dual resonance intake system, produces a responsive 138 hp and - like the 6-cylinder models - is available with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The 318i Sedan is the lowest-priced BMW model and a value-packed entry to BMW ownership. Thanks to new body-color bumpers and outside mirrors, it now looks just like the 325i Sedan, except for its 15 x 6-in. steel wheels (with attractive full wheel covers) instead of the 6-cylinder model's 15 x 7-in. alloys; the tire size also differs. Inside, the 318i comes with a standard choice of cloth or leatherette upholstery and a 6-speaker audio system.
In addition to the body-color bumpers and mirrors, cruise control is a new 318i Sedan standard item. And the range of options has been expanded dramatically: For the first time, this 4-cylinder model is available with Premium and Sports Packages, and there are several new individual options.
The Premium Package includes 15 x 7-in. alloy wheels and 205/60R-15 tires (as on the 325i Sedan), foglights, adjustable steering wheel, leather upholstery and the 10-speaker premium audio system - all except the foglights heretofore unavailable for this model.
The Sports Package combines a traction-improving limited-slip differential, the alloy wheels and larger tires, sports suspension and adjustable steering wheel. (As in the other models, the Premium and Sports Packages are not available in combination with each other.) Available as new individual options are leather, the alloy wheels and larger tires, and the premium audio system.
The 318is Coupe looks just like the 325is Coupe - that is, a sporty 2-door model with long hood and short rear deck. It comes standard with 15 x 7-in. alloy wheels and 205/60R-15 tires, foglights and cruise control (newly standard), folding rear seats and, like the Sedan, an expanded selection of options. Its Premium Package includes leather upholstery and premium audio system - all previously unavailable in this model. The 318is Sports Package combines limited-slip differential, sports suspension and adjustable steering wheel; the premium audio system is also available individually.
